An automatic electric side-by-side two-pole circuit breaker having an insulating casing formed from the complementary association of a base casing, an intermediate casing and a cover which provide a pair of mechanism receiving compartments in side-by-side association. Each compartment carries a pivotally supported operating handle which extends partially outward from the casing for external manual operation, a line terminal, a load terminal electrically connected to said line terminal, a stationary contact intermediate said line terminal and said load terminal and a movable blade which carries a movable contact on one end and has its opposite end connected to the handle. A releasably latched generally thin trip lever is pivotally mounted within the compartment and is releasable from its latched position to a tripped position to effect separation of the contacts. The trip lever includes an upstanding leg which is engaged by a protuberance on the handle for resetting the trip lever. The handle overlaps the trip lever as does the movable contact blade which has an extending top segment received in a recess of the handle for operation of the movable blade by the handle. A spring is connected between the generally J-shaped blade and the trip lever for snap action of the blade.

A molded case circuit breaker includes a movable lower electrical contact having a formed stationary member, a movable contact arm, a pair of electrical contact compression springs, a contact arm compression spring and a contact secured to the upper end of the movable contact arm for physically and electrically contacting a separable upper electrical contact. An integral longitudinal end portion of the stationary member extends through the base of the cirucit breaker to form an external terminal of the circuit breaker. The opposite longitudinal end of the stationary member is curved for receiving a rotatable pin fixedly secured to the movable contact arm for rotation therewith. The rotatable pin is biased by the pair of compression springs into effective current conducting contact with the curved end of the stationary member. The contact arm compression spring contacts the underside of the movable contact arm to bias the contact secured thereto into engagement with the upper electrical contact. Upon the occurrence of a high level short circuit or fault current condition, the movable contact arm rotates against the force of the contact arm compression spring to achieve rapid separation of the upper and lower electrical contacts.

The mechanism is operable by a single test/reset push button whose initial travel from a normal operating position causes closing of test circuit contacts while power contacts are engaged. Upon an actual or test trip actuating the trip solenoid of the interrupter, a latch member releases a member holding movable power contacts and also extends the push button out due to spring action to indicate the occurrence of the trip. For resetting, the same button is again pushed to reengage the power contacts in a closed position after which release of the button returns it to its normal operating position in which the mechanism is latched.

A thermal overload relay for a three-phase power supply circuit having an auxiliary normally open (N.O.) or a normally closed (N.C.) contact unit (FIG. 5, FIG. 6) selectively addable in the field. The relay is provided with the standard normally closed contact by way of a subassembly (20) that is installed by the manufacturer for circuit protective purposes and a slot (12p) and securing means (12n, 77) alongside this subassembly for receiving an auxiliary contact unit (57) that can be inserted and secured by a screw (77) in the field. A contact operating lever (54) is constructed so that it will actuate the auxiliary contact unit (57) at the end of the trip stroke thereby affording redistribution or retiming of the spring forces that will enhance the tripping function because less initial spring force is required at the beginning of the trip stroke. The N.O. and N.C. auxiliary contact units (57) are assembled from common parts plus a selected one of two interchangeable contact bias springs (74, 78) and are constructed so as to have wiping action to insure low voltage level reliability.

A setting mechanism for tripping devices of electrical switchgear has a driven inner member carrying a radially extending, resilient detent arm which interacts with stationary detent slots. For joining with an outer driving member, an interrupted ring snap-in connection is provided between the inner and outer elements which is designed so that eccentric forces as well as asymmetrical spreading forces caused by the resilient detent arm and by the application of torque can be transmitted. For this purpose, two larger posts lying one behind the other on the longitudinal axis of the detent arm have right-angled undercuts and two smaller posts disposed between the first posts are provided with radial projections. The projections have side walls lying in planes extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the setting mechanism. The setting mechanism members are made as complete parts by injection molding of plastic material.

A circuit interrupter having a magnetic trip element which is integral with the latch. The disclosed circuit interrupter is provided with a bimetal and a magnetic trip element directly connected to the latch of the circuit interrupter which is drawn towards the bimetal, unlatching the circuit interrupter when current flow therethrough exceeds a high overload level. The disclosed circuit interrupter is particularly adaptable for use on a distribution transformer. A movable bridging contact for completing a series circuit between two stationary contacts is provided. The movable bridging contact is spring biased towards an open position separated from the stationary contacts, but with the circuit interrupter in the normally closed position is held in engagement with the stationary contacts by a latching mechanism which is responsive to the bimetal or magnetic trip element to allow the circuit breaker to trip open during overload conditions. The magnetic trip element is formed integral with the latching mechanism to reduce time delay before operation. A plurality of poles are operated using only one operating mechanism by connecting the elongated operating arms with a strong metallic member for simultaneous operation of all poles. The bridging contact is disposed near the end of an elongated operating arm which is linked to the circuit breaker operating mechanism. Each pole of the circuit interrupter is provided with a bimetallic trip element. The magnetic trip element can be formed from a single piece having a plurality of legs each disposed in proximity with the bimetal of one pole.
