    摘要: Rack and pinion assemblies employ a bearing assembly which is provided for rotatably mounting the pinion member in a housing member, the bearing assembly comprising three generally annular bearing elements which substantially encircle the pinion member. A first of the bearing elements is carried by one of the pinion or housing members and the second and third of the bearing elements are carried in an axially disposed relationship by the other of these members. The first element has a first bearing surface which engages axially between and slidably abuts substantially complementary second and third bearing surfaces of the second and third elements, respectively. The area of abutment between the respective surfaces extends both radially and axially so that the abutment restrains both radial and axial displacement of the first bearing element relative to the other two. The bearing assembly may be mounted in the rack and pinion assembly on a piecemeal basis, or may advantageously be provided as a preformed, pre-loaded unit whereby loading adjustments do not depend upon the skill of an operator during assembly of the rack and pinion.

    摘要: A steering gear assembly of the type adapted for automobile application and including a housing, a worm shaft rotatably supported on the housing, a rack nut disposed in the worm shaft for bodily shiftable movement in response to rotation of the worm shaft, a plurality of straight rack teeth on the rack nut, a pitman shaft rotatably supported on the housing and having a sector portion with a plurality of straight gear teeth, the roots of which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pitman shaft, and a torsion spring disposed between the rack nut and the housing, the torsion spring functioning to bias the rack nut toward a no-lash position wherein the rack teeth are disposed at an angle relative to the gear teeth so that the former wedgingly engage the latter to eliminate lash therebetween. The gear teeth generate a reaction force on the rack teeth during periods of force transfer therebetween which reaction force rotates the rack nut against the spring bias until the area of contact between the teeth is maximized.

    摘要: A power steering mechanism is constructed for selective assembly so that a steering worm spindle may protrude from either end of a housing, the opposite end being sealed. The housing ends are constructed dimensionally so that interchangeable bearings and seals can be applied and either of a pair of steering worm spindles used, depending on the space into which the housing must be fitted in a vehicle. This minimizes dimensional space requirements. Similarly, either of a pair of housings may be selected, usable with either one of the aforementioned pair of spindles, thereby effecting choice of four assembly arrangements.
