Abstract:
Apparatus 10 for detecting inadequate maintenance of a system 12 of an aircraft or other vehicle is provided. The apparatus comprises: computer readable medium or media 14 configured to store data 18 relating to operation or non-operation of the system 12 over a period of time; and a data processing unit 16 configured to evaluate the data to identify at least one event indicative of the inadequate maintenance of the system.
Abstract:
A bent optical fiber coupler (100) that employs at least one optical fiber (10) is disclosed. The coupler includes a curved optical fiber guide channel (200) having a strong curve. The optical fiber(s) held within the optical fiber guide channel have a bend corresponding to the guide channel curve. The fiber end portions are optionally disposed within a straight fiber guide (160) at a coupler input/output end, which is preferably configured to have a standard connector geometry. Use of nanostructured fibers for the at least one optical fiber allows for strong bends having tight radii of curvature without imparting significant attenuation. Coupler assemblies that include the coupler optically coupled to at least one opto-electronic device (310) are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A polymer based index-matching gel for use with nanostructure optical fibers is disclosed. The index-matching gel has at least one polymer component having a viscosity η at 25° C. of 3 Pa-s≦η≦100 Pa-s, which prevents the index-matching gel from wicking into the voids and down the nanostructure optical fiber to a depth where the fiber performance and/or device performance is compromised. The gel is suitable for use when mechanically splicing optical fibers when at least one of the optical fibers is a nanostructure optical fiber. The gel is also suitable for use in fiber optic connectors wherein at least one of the optical fibers constituting the connection is a nanostructure optical fiber.
Abstract:
A vacuum cleaner includes a pair of low efficiency cyclones connected upstream of respective groups of high efficiency cyclones by respective elongate ducts. The high efficiency cyclones of each group can be arranged in a line or a cluster extending away from their respective low efficiency cyclone, such that at least a portion of one side of the low efficiency cyclone is exposed. The high efficiency cyclones can be connected to their respective elongate ducts at respective positions along the length thereof, with each cyclone comprising an inlet connecting to the duct. The inlets of each high efficiency cyclone can be stepped along the axis of the duct with respect to the inlet of each other cyclone of the group, in a direction which extends across the width of the duct.

Abstract:
The present invention provides an integrated tailgate for a vehicle having a planar cargo bed, the tailgate operable between a closed vertical position and an open horizontal position, and a structure slideably received by the tailgate extendable to a substantially horizontal position when the tailgate is in the open position, whereat the structure is rotateably operable between the horizontal position, an upwardly rotated substantially vertical position perpendicular to the open tailgate, and a downwardly rotated position a predetermined degree between zero and ninety degrees.
Abstract:
The method and apparatus of the present invention scores a golf shot, such as a golf shot at a practice range, in order to provide a golfer with a meaningful index by which to measure their improvement and/or by which to compare their performance to the performance of other golfers at the practice range. The scoring method and apparatus determines the final position of the golf ball following the golf shot and generates a signal representative of the final position. The scoring method and apparatus also includes a signal processor for determining the score of the golf shot. The signal processor determines the score based upon a predetermined difficulty function and a dispersion distance between the final position of the golf ball and a predetermined target toward which the golf ball was driven. In addition, the predetermined difficulty function can be at least partially based upon a predetermined contour function which takes into account the contour or layout of a particular golf hole such that the resulting difficulty function defines contour lines of uniform difficulty surrounding the predetermined target.
Abstract:
An electrostatic discharge protection device for protecting a mixed voltage integrated circuit against damage is provided which includes at least one pair of NMOS transistors connected in a cascode configuration. Each NMOS transistor pair includes a first transistor, having a drain region coupled to an I/O stage of the mixed voltage integrated circuit, and a gate region coupled to the mixed voltage integrated circuit's low power supply. The protection device also includes a second NMOS transistor, merged into the same active area as the first transistor, having a gate region and source region coupled to the ground plane of the mixed voltage integrated circuit. The drain region of the second transistor and the source region of the first transistor is constructed by a shared NMOS diffusion region. This shared diffusion region also constructs the common node coupling the source region of the first transistor to the drain region of the second. The shared diffusion area is a further benefit of the invention because its length controls the trigger voltage and the holding voltage of each cascode configured transistor pair. This electrostatic discharge protection device can be used either as a self protecting pull-down portion of a mixed voltage I/O stage or, in a further aspect of the present invention, as a separate electrostatic discharge clamp.
