Abstract:
An undersea hydraulic coupling is disclosed having tails on both the male and female members to allow insertion through and attachment to manifold plates. The tails on the hydraulic coupling members are provided with substantially rigid positioning members to allow the coupling members to be held in a nominal position with respect to the manifold plate, thereby preventing galling when the coupling members are mated, and further preventing unnecessary crimping or pressure weakened points at the connection of the tail to hydraulic lines.
Abstract:
According to one embodiment of the present invention, a thermoacoustic device has a complaint enclosure which includes a rigid portion and a compliant portion. The compliant portion includes an oscillating member and a flexure seal with a pair of ends and a flexure body extending between the ends. One of the ends is sealed to the rigid portion and the other end is sealed to the oscillating member. The flexure seal has an average cross-sectional area and an end-to-end equilibrium length. A flexure volume is defined as the product of the average cross-sectional area and the end-to-end equilibrium length. A thermal core is disposed in the complaint enclosure and includes at least a first and a second heat exchanger. A working volume of gaseous working fluid fills the complaint enclosure. The working volume of gaseous working fluid has an equilibrium pressure. A motor is operable to oscillate the oscillating member such that the end-to-end length of the flexure seal is increased and decreased with respect to the equilibrium length. Therefore, the pressure of the working volume of gaseous working fluid is oscillated between a peak pressure greater than the equilibrium pressure and a minimum pressure less than the equilibrium pressure. In some embodiments, the working volume is less than or equal to four times the flexure volume, while in other embodiments, the working volume is less than or equal to two times or one times the flexure volume.
Abstract:
A chemiluminescent assay to determine the presence and/or amount of one or more labeled target molecules in a sample is described in which the surface layer of a solid support is contacted with a composition comprising first and second chemiluminescent substrates capable of being activated by first and second enzymes, respectively. A plurality of probes are disposed on the surface layer in discrete areas. At least some of the probes are bound to a first enzyme conjugate comprising the first enzyme and at least some of the probes are bound to a second enzyme conjugate comprising the second enzyme. The resulting chemiluminescent signals are then detected. The method can be used to compare two biological samples (e.g., mRNA populations from different cells) on the same support surface or to provide a chemiluminescent control signal for normalizing chemiluminescent assay data from a biological sample.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods and compositions related to transgenic plants which incorporate genetic traits of the marine eelgrass Zostera marina. These traits include pathogen resistance, which may be conferred by stimulating zosteric acid biosynthesis.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for converting and improving an existing analog audio recording as it is converted into a digital format with reliable tone detection and interpretation. Specifically, the digitized audio undergoes three tone detection processing steps: silence detection and removal, anomaly detection and removal and page/chapter identification.
Abstract:
A method for the abatement of one or more pyrophoric gases in a gas stream, which includes introducing water in to the gas stream and/or mixing the gas stream with preheated air and introducing the gas stream in to a container in which the pyrophoric gases are abated.
Abstract:
A method of destroying or controlling unwanted vegetation and agricultural pests is disclosed. The method produces a jet stream of treatment fluid, being mixed combustion gas and superheated or dry steam for application to thermally destroy unwanted vegetation and posts. The method involves the use of a hydrocarbon burner and a water source.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for suppressing route request messages for wireless gateway applications by establishing a relationship between a serving mobile switching center identifier and a facility identifier at a wireless gateway switch. The wireless gateway switch determines a corresponding facility to the serving mobile switch in order to establish an incoming call to a wireless subscriber unit. An exemplary embodiment exploits the present invention in a wireless system utilizing ANSI-41 messaging.
Abstract:
An apparatus, method and system are provided which, for a wireless telecommunication session handled by a mobile switching center, allow an adjunct network entity, such as an intelligent peripheral, a service node, a service control point, or another switching center, to maintain control over the telecommunication session and, in the preferred embodiment, provide intelligent network services. Such control is provided without the adjunct network entity monitoring or maintaining a direct connection the telecommunication session, such as a voice path or other circuit-based connection. In the various embodiments, the adjunct network entity maintains such control through the transmission of a control message to the mobile switching center, in which the control message includes various directives to the mobile switching center, such as a redirection directive, directing the switching center to route or reroute a call leg to specified digits; an announcement directive, directing the switching center to play a specified announcement during the telecommunication session; or an action directive, directing the switching center to perform a specified action such as releasing the telecommunication session.
Abstract:
A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture are disclosed that provide an efficient and non-ambiguous differentiation and subsequent selection of a single virtual element displayed in close proximity with multiple other virtual elements on a two-dimensional graphics display. A large number of virtual element selection elements are possible at a single two-dimensional display location of a virtual three-dimensional space. The differentiation tool displays a large number of selection possibilities in a small screen size and substantially linear format such that rapid and non-ambiguous graphic selections are possible.
