Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling echo in audio communications between a near-end system and a far-end system are described. The system and method may intelligently assign a plurality of microphone beams to a limited number of echo cancellers for processing. The microphone beams may be classified based on generated statistics to determine beams of interest (e.g., beams with a high ratio of local-voice to echo). Based on this ranking/classification of microphone beams, beams of greater interest may be assigned to echo cancellers while less important beams may temporally remain unprocessed until these beams become of higher importance/interest. Accordingly, a limited number of echo cancellers may be used to intelligently process a larger number of microphone beams based on interest in the beams and properties of echo cancellation performed for each beam.

Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for automatically transitioning between communication modes of wearable audio output devices based solely on acoustic analysis. The audio output devices may operate in one of three electroacoustic modes. In the transparency mode, an audio output device may pass through the speech signal of a nearby user. In the peer-to-peer mode, the audio output device may establish a direct low-latency radio frequency (RF) link to another audio output device. In the telephony mode, the audio output device may communicate with another audio output device using networked telephony. The disclosed methods and systems perform acoustic analysis of the near-field speech signal of a local wearer of the audio output device and the far-field speech signal of a remote talker to determine the best mode for the audio output device to use and to seamlessly transition between the modes as the acoustic environment between the wearers changes.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for a multimedia device with audio and video capturing capability to identify an audio device based on acoustic playback signal if the audio device cannot be identified from captured video. The multimedia device may assemble a list of candidate audio devices that are a possible match for the observed audio device from a database of previously recognized audio devices and may transmit commands to the candidate audio devices to play acoustic identification signals. The acoustic identification signals may be audible sound or ultrasonic tone sequences with embedded identification information unique to each audio device. The multimedia device may record and analyze the acoustic identification signals received from any of the candidate audio devices to construct metrics to select the most likely candidate for the observed audio device. The metrics may include time of flight, direction of arrival, received amplitude, direct-to-reverberant ratio (DRR) of the acoustic identification signals.

Abstract: A media system and a method of using the media system to reproduce spatial audio based on head-to-torso orientation, are described. The method includes determining a head-to-source orientation and a head-to-torso orientation based on head orientation data generated by a head tracking device. Determining the head-to-torso orientation includes determining torso movements based on movements of the head. The torso can be determined to move when the head movements meet a head movement condition, such as a predetermined angle of movement or pattern of movement. A binaural audio filter that is based on a head-related transfer function corresponding to both the head-to-source orientation and the head-to-torso orientation is applied to an audio input signal to generate an audio output signal. The audio output signal is played to accurately recreate spatial audio having sounds emitted to the user by a sound source. Other aspects are also described and claimed.

Abstract: A binaural room impulse response (BRIR) can be generated based on a position of a listener's head, and a plurality of head related impulse responses (HRIRs). Each of the plurality of HRIRs are selected for a respective one of a plurality of acoustic reflections which, when taken together, approximate reverberation of a room. Each of the acoustic reflections have a direction and a delay. The BRIR filter is applied to source audio to generate binaural audio output.

Abstract: An audio system and a method of using the audio system to determine an interaural head-related transfer function (HRTF) parameter, are described. The audio system can generate binaural recordings using microphones that are worn by a user in everyday scenarios. The audio system can measure interaural parameter values of selected segments of the recordings, and the measurements can be accumulated over time. The interaural HRTF parameter can be estimated based on the measurements. The interaural HRTF parameter can be used to adapt a generic HRTF to generate an individualized HRTF for the user. Other aspects are also described and claimed.
