Abstract: The same or similar physical signals can be used for both user equipment (UE) and an integrated access backhaul (IAB) node. Different configurations of resources and/or transmission periods of the signals can be used for initial access for access UEs and IAB nodes. In addition, since the UE functionality for IAB nodes is not fully identical with access UEs, the network can identify which UEs performing initial access are normal access UEs or are IAB nodes with UE functionality. Furthermore, the parameters for configuring radio resource management operation at the IAB node gNode B function can consider a half-duplex constraint imposed by the UE function and can also analyze hop order and other topology/route management functionalities.

Abstract: An integrated access and backhaul network is provided with network nodes that can establish timing synchronization with any other network nodes. In an embodiment, network nodes in a multi-hop integrated access and backhaul network have a hop order of n, wherein n represents a number of hops from a node connected to the core network via a wired connection. In an embodiment, instead of using the network node with a hop order of 0 as the timing synchronization reference for over-the-air synchronization, any network node can use any other network node as a synchronization reference. A relay node can first establish a wireless link to said arbitrary node. Said wireless link is then used to synchronize the relay or IAB node using a Precision Time Protocol (PTP) implementation.

Abstract: Power control can be employed, whereby a power control adjustment can be determined by a relay distributed unit (DU) device, based on a measurement of the power level of received access uplink transmissions, and a measurement of the power level of a reference signal received from a donor DU via a backhaul downlink transmission. The power control adjustment can be transmitted to the donor distributed unit device, which uses the power control adjustment to reduce the amount of power of downlink transmissions to the relay distributed unit device.

Abstract: The random access channel procedure for new radio NR can be designed to support multiple use cases with various requirements. The NR physical layer can support the independent configuration of resources used for the random access channel (RACH) procedures that can be transparent to user equipment (UE) devices and independent from resources configured for the UE. For instance, in the case of a standalone NR the RACH configuration can be obtained by the UE by either signaling on the NR carrier or fixed within the telecommunications standard. While in the case of non-standalone NR the RACH configuration can be obtained by the UE by broadcast or dedicated signaling on a different carrier than the NR carrier (e.g. a Long Term Evolution carrier).

Abstract: To increase network efficiency, a user equipment (UE) can be appointed as a local manager to coordinate the allocation of resources used by other UEs. For example, the network can promote the UE as a local manager and assign the local manager a resource pool. The local manager can then broadcast synchronization signals to let the other UEs associate themselves with the local manager. After the other UEs are synced with the local manager, the local manager can allocate resources to the other UEs. Based on report data regarding the local managers management procedures, the network can maintain the UE as the local manager or demote the UE from local manager status.

Abstract: Various embodiments disclosed herein provide for an enhanced timing advance scheme to support MU-MIMO in an integrated access and backhaul system. The timing advance scheme disclosed herein aligns the arrival time between backhaul links and access links to enable MU-MIMO gain at the receiver side. In the integrated access and backhaul system, which comprises distributed nodes, the timing advance offset for an access link transmission (a transmission to a node further away in hops from the core network, or to a user equipment device) can be modified by offsetting it with the timing advance of the backhaul link (e.g., from a parent node). This enables the arrival time for transmissions, both access link transmissions from the UE or child node, and backhaul link transmissions from a parent node to arrive at the same time.

The relay node device can be configured to operate according to a fifth generation wireless network communication protocol, or other advanced communication protocols.
