Abstract: A battery includes S battery cells of a first type. Each of the S battery cells includes a plurality of first cathode electrodes and a plurality of first anode electrodes. The battery includes T battery cells of a second type, wherein each of the T battery cells includes a plurality of second cathode electrodes and a plurality of second anode electrodes, where S and T are integers greater than one. The T battery cells are arranged between the S battery cells. At least one of the plurality of first cathode electrodes includes a first cathode active material that is different than a second cathode active material of the plurality of second cathode electrodes. The plurality of first anode electrodes includes a first anode active material that is different than a second anode active material of the plurality of second anode electrodes.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an electrolyte layer for use in an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions. The electrolyte layer includes a porous film that defines a plurality of voids and includes a plurality of solid-state electrolyte particles and a plurality of polymeric fibrils that connect the solid-state electrolyte particles. The electrolyte layer also includes a gel polymeric electrolyte that at least partially fills the plurality of voids in the porous film. The porous film has a thickness greater than or equal to about 2 micrometers to less than or equal to about 100 micrometers, and a porosity greater than or equal to about 10 vol. % to less than or equal to about 50 vol. %. The a gel polymeric electrolyte fills greater than or equal to about 0.1% to less than or equal to about 150% of a total porosity of the porous film.

The electrochemical cell also includes a negative electrode including 90 wt. % to 98 wt. % of a graphite-containing negative electroactive material, 0.05 wt. % to 3 wt. % a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder having a molecular weight (MW) greater than or equal to about 6,000,000 u, 0.05 wt. % to 2 wt. % of an ancillary binder, and 1 wt. % to 5 wt. % of a second electronically conductive material.

The negative electrode has a single-sided loading capacity at room temperature between about 4.5 mAh/cm2 and about 5.5 mAh/cm2.

Abstract: A pre-lithiated, precursor electrode includes an electroactive material layer, a current collector, and a lithium foil disposed between the electroactive material layer and the current collector. A method of preparing an electrode to be used in an electrochemical cell is provide. The method includes preparing a pre-lithiated, precursor electrode. Preparing the pre-lithiated precursor electrode includes contacting at least a first electroactive material layer with a first surface of a lithium foil assembly, where the lithium foil assembly includes a current collector and at least a first lithium foil disposed on or adjacent to a first surface of the current collector. The method may further include contacting the prelithiated, precursor electrode with an electrolyte in the electrochemical cell, where the first lithium foil at least partially or fully dissolves when contacted by the electrolyte to form the electrode and a lithium reservoir in the electrochemical cell.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an electrochemical cell that includes a double-sided electrode. The double-sided electrode includes a first electroactive material layer, a second electroactive material layer, and a current collector disposed between the first and second electroactive material layers. Each of the first and second electroactive material layers may include a plurality of electroactive material sub-films and a plurality of buffer layers disposed between adjacent electroactive material sub-films. The electrochemical cell further includes a first single-sided electrode substantially aligned with the first electroactive material layer; a first separator physically separating the first single-sided electrode and the first electroactive material layer; a second single-sided electrode substantially aligned with the second electroactive material layer; and a second separator physically separating the second single-sided electrode and the second electroactive material layer. The current collector may include at least one surface coated with an adhesive layer.
