摘要: A 1.times.N fiber optic coupler is formed by assembling a coupler preform including spacer tube means surrounded by an outer glass tube that is concentric with the spacer tube means. A first optical fiber is disposed in an axial bore in the spacer tube means, and N optical fibers are disposed within a gap between the spacer tube means and the outer tube, the first fiber and the N fibers extending through the midregion of the coupler preform. The midregion of the outer tube is heated to collapse it about the fibers, and the central portion of the midregion is stretched to reduce the diameter thereof over a predetermined length. In accordance with the invention, the spacer tube means is glued to the first optical fiber and to the outer tube.

摘要: A monolithic, environmentally stable Mach-Zehnder device is formed by threading first and second dissimilar optical fibers through the bore of a glass tube. The tube is evacuated and heated to collapse it onto the fibers. The tube is further heated and stretched at two spaced locations to form two couplers that are joined by the two optical fibers. The fibers have different propagation constants in the region between the two couplers, whereby there is a relative delay in the optical signal propagating in one of the fibers with respect to the optical signal propagating in the other fiber.

摘要: After a plurality of optical fibers are fused to make a fiber optic coupler, the ends thereof are glued to a substrate to provide the outwardly extending fibers with adequate pull strength. The glue can flow from the point of application toward the fused region where it can adversely affect the the device. To prevent the glue from flowing too far toward the fused region and yet permit sufficient flow to strengthen the fibers, a beam of UV light is directed onto the fibers at that predetermined point where glue flow should stop. When the glue is cured by the beam, it stops flowing. Thereafter, the remainder of the glue is cured.

摘要: A fiber optic coupler is formed by inserting a plurality of optical fibers into the longitudinal bore of a glass tube so that at least a portion of each fiber extends from at least one end of the tube. The midregion of the tube is collapsed onto the fibers, uncollapsed bore portions remaining at the tube end regions. Each bore portion is connected to the tube end surface by a funnel that facilitates the fiber insertion step. The central portion of the midregion is stretched to reduce the diameter thereof. In a first embodiment, glue is applied to the funnel. Before the glue is cured, a sufficient period of time is allowed to elapse to permit said glue to flow by capillary action between the fibers and the adjacent portion of the wall of the bore portion. The glue flows at least 3 mm into the bore portion beyond the bottom of the funnel. The glue that flows by capillary action fails to completely surround the fibers with glue. The glue is then cured. In a second embodiment, a hollow filament is inserted into the uncollapsed bore portion and a vacuum is applied to the filament. Glue, which is applied to the funnel, is drawn into the uncollapsed bore portion due to the evacuated condition thereof, thus filling the uncollapsed bore portion to the desired level.

摘要: A quantitative assay for HAV comprises infecting at a temperature of from about 30.degree. to about 37.degree. C. a cell sheet with a dilution series of hepatitis A virus and then adding Newcastle disease virus (NDV) to the infected cell sheet and incubating the infected cell sheet in the presence of NDV at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to permit a cytopathic effect (CPE) to become manifest, this time typically being at least about 4 days and preferably about 5 days. At an incubation temperature of from about 31.degree. to about 33.degree. C. the absence of CPE indicates the presence of HAV and the presence of CPE indicates the absence of HAV. At an incubation temperature of from about 34.degree. to about 36.degree. C. the absence of CPE indicates the absence of HAV and the presence of CPE indicates the presence of HAV.

摘要: A mold press comprising a force equalizer independent of the mold platens. The force equalizer consists of a pair of plates defining a cavity therebetween. The cavity is filled with a force distributing material, such as hydraulic fluid. An opening is provided through the force equalizer to provide the extruder access to the mold plates. This opening is surrounded by a floating seal which permits movement of the equalizer plates with respect to the seal. The cavity is designed to extend beyond the chase footprint areas by an amount dictated by the size and relation of the footprint areas to one another.

摘要: A public-key data encryption system employing RSA public-key data encryption including a message encrypter capable of encrypting messages using a non-secret encryption key, a transmitter-receiver coupled to the message encrypter which transmits or receives an encrypted message to or from a remote location, the transmitter-receiver also being coupled to a decrypter capable of decrypting a received encrypted message using a decryption key which is a secret input to the decrypter, and an encryption-decryption key generator, including a microprocessor or other large-scale integrated circuit or circuits formed to generate a sequence of prime numbers beginning with a selected known prime number having a length relatively short with respect to the desired length of the last in the sequence of prime numbers, and which is constructed to form the sequence of prime numbers in the form hP+1 where P is the preceding prime number in the sequence, and to test hP+1 for primality by first determining if hP+1 has a GCD of 1 with x, wherein x is a composite number consisting of the product of all known prime numbers less than or equal to a pre-selected known prime number and if the GCD is not equal to 1, incrementing h to form a new hP+1 to be tested for a GCD equal to 1, and when a GCD is found to be 1, performing the primality tests to determine whether 2.sup.hP .ident.1 [mod (hP+1)] and 2.sup.h .notident.1 [mod (hP+1)], and if either 2.sup.hP .notident.1 [mod (hP+1)] or 2.sup.h .ident.1 [mod (hP+1)] further incrementing h and so on until a prime is found in this manner and then determining if the length of the prime number is of or greater than the desired length. If the hP+1 which has been determined to be prime is not of the desired length, hP+1 is placed in the sequence of prime numbers and a new h selected to be used to find the next prime number in the sequence in accordance with the above described procedure by forming a new hP+1 in which P is the previously determined prime number in the sequence of prime numbers. When a prime number in the sequence of prime numbers is found which is of the desired length it is input into the encryption-decryption key generator for generating the RSA public-key encryption and decryption keys.

摘要: A cable clamp assembly and a cable clamp method for a flat fiber optic cable are disclosed. The assembly includes a wedge-shaped outer shell with a bottom wall having a friction inner surface with a longitudinal central recess formed therein. The flat fiber optic cable resides within the interior of the outer shell and is supported by the friction inner surface. A shim having two parallel rows of protrusions fits within the interior of the outer shell with the protrusions being in contact with the fiber optic cable. The assembly includes a wedge insert having two outer ridges that substantially align with the two rows of protrusions. When the wedge insert matingly engages the outer shell, the outer ridges press down on the protrusions, which in turn press down on the fiber optic cable mainly at the locations where longitudinal dielectric strength members reside.
