In a semiconductor laser a semiconductor substrate has a terrace structure in a manner to have an upper face, a lower face, and a step part disposed between the upper and lower faces. A clad layer is formed on the semiconductor substrate having an upper part, a lower part, and a central part. The upper part is on the upper face and the step part. The lower part is on the lower face and the central part connecting the upper and lower parts and is thicker than the upper and lower parts in a manner that a step-shaped downward-bending surface of the central part is located above the lower face. An active layer formed on the clad layer includes an upper lateral part, a lower lateral part, a center part connecting the upper and lower lateral parts, with a lasing region being a part of the upper lateral part which is near a bending part of the step-shaped downward-bending surface.

The adhesive bonding of a silicone rubber to a metal surface can be very much improved by the use of the inventive primer composition, in particular, with respect to the heat resistance and anti-oil resistance of the adhesion. The inventive primer composition comprises (a) a substantially linear diorganopolysiloxane of gum-like consistency free from aliphatic unsaturation, (b) an organopolysiloxane with the organic group/silicon atom molar ratio of 1.9 to 2.3 and having a limited amount of vinyl groups directly bonded to the silicon atoms and a viscosity of 5 to 10,000 centistokes at 25.degree. C., (c) an organopolysiloxane resin with the molar ratio of organic groups/silicon atoms of 0.5 to 1.7, (d) an organosilane compound such as vinyl trimethoxysilane or vinyl tris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane, (e) a finely divided silica filler, (f) an organic peroxide and (g) a curing agent for silicone resins, all in limited weight proportions.

The composition is formulated with a polymer blend of an ethylene-propylene copolymeric elastomer and a specific organopolysiloxane having certain amount of mercapto-substituted organic groups bonded to the silicon atoms as the base component admixed with a filler and a crosslinking agent or a vulcanizing agent.
