A monomer to produce polybenzimidazole is dissolved in polyphosphoric acid. For example, polysulfated phenylene sulfonic acid (acidic group-possessing polymer) is further dissolved in this solution. In this procedure, the acidic group-possessing polymer and the monomer are adsorbed to one another in accordance with the acid-base interaction. When the monomer is polymerized, for example, by means of dehydration polymerization in this state, then polybenzimidazole is synthesized, and the polybenzimidazole and the acidic group-possessing polymer are compatibilized with each other to produce a compatibilized polymer. When the compatibilized polymer is deposited as a solid, and the solid is separated from polyphosphoric acid, then the compatibilized polymer is obtained. A proton conductive solid polymer electrolyte as a final product is manufactured by forming the compatibilized polymer to have a predetermined shape.

The invention provides a poly(imide-benzoxazole) (PIBO) copolymer prepared from a trimellitic anhydride halide monomer and a bis(o-diaminophenol) monomer. The PIBO copolymer is characterized by the following recurring unit: wherein X is —O—, —S—, —C(CF3)2—, —C(CH3)2—, —CO—, —CH2—, —SO2—, —SO—, or deleted; and n is an integer. The PIBO copolymers of this invention are particularly useful as dielectric layers in semiconductor devices because they possess hydroxyl groups which create better adhesion to semiconductor substrates.

A novel class of high temperature ion-containing poly(aromatic) polymers is disclosed. They are Poly(aryl amide(nullCONHnull), sulfonyl amide (nullSO2NHnull), imide((nullCOnull)2Nnull), imidazole ((nullNHnull)(nullNnull)Cnull), oxazoles ((nullNHnull)(nullOnull)Cnull), thiazoles ((nullNHnull)(nullSnull)Cnull), amino (nullNHnull) group, ether (nullOnull), sulfide (nullSnull), sulfone (nullSO2null), or some combination of them) and they contain at least one type of ionic functional group selected from the following: (a) pendent ionic group: -Q-SO3(M), or -Q-SO2nullN(M)nullSO2nullR, or nullSO2nullN(M)nullSO2nullR (b) linking ionic group: nullSO2nullN(M)nullSO2null-Q-SO2nullN(M)nullSO2null-Q-SO2nullN(M)nullSO2-Q-wherein Q is a fluorinated alkylene or fluorinated alkoxylene group with carbon number from 1 to 12, and R is a fluorinated alkyl or fluorinated alkoxy group with carbon number from 1 to 12. Because the residual content of the BB-PBZ monomer in polybenzazole is not more than 0.010 wt %, a polybenzazole fiber having a small filament denier can be produced stably at a high speed without suffering from thread breakage during the production.

A method for producing polybenzazole, which comprises reacting a PBZ monomer salt with an AA-PBZ monomer or a BB-PBZ monomer in a non-oxidizing solvent having a dehydrating action to give an oligomer, and adding the AA-PBZ monomer or BB-PBZ monomer, which has not been subjected to the above reaction, to allow reaction with the oligomer, whereby to give a polymer having a desired polymerization degree. E is a reactive end group, and the macromonomer has an average degree of polymerization, DP.sub.n, greater than 6. Such macromonomers are chemically incorporated into polymer systems to provide stronger stiffened polymers.

A method for preparing optical quality, thin films of polymers and co-polymers, as well as blends of such polymers or co-polymers with flexible polymers and co-polymers which comprises (a) preparing a solution of the polymer or co-polymer or blend in a suitable solvent; (b) forming a film from the solution; (c) cooling the thus-formed film to a temperature below the freezing point of the solvent; and (d) dissolving the solvent out of said film at a temperature below the melting point of the solvent. This method can be employed to prepare films of high optical clarity for electro-optical device applications. Because of their thermal stability, mechanical strength and chemical resistance, films prepared according to this method can also be used as filters and separation membranes.

Novel compositions comprising a high concentration of one or more extended chain homopolymer, copolymer, or block polymer and certain polyphosphoric acids are prepared. Such compositions are optically anisotropic (liquid crystalline), capable of exhibiting excellent cohesive strength, and are especially suited to the production of high molecular weight ordered polymer fibers by dry-jet wet spinning. These liquid crystalline compositions are capable of being drawn through long air gap distances and spun at exceptionally high spin draw ratios. Fibers, films and other articles formed from these liquid crystalline compositions exhibit exceptionally high physical and heat resistant properties.
