A method of connecting devices to a network is provided. The method includes providing base stations connected to a network, and at each of the base stations, receiving probe signals from terminal devices. For each of the terminal devices, the base station calculates a signature waveform based on a time-reversed waveform of a channel response signal derived from the corresponding probe signal. For each of the terminal devices, the base station determines a downlink transmit signal for the terminal device based on the downlink data and the corresponding signature waveform, and transmits the downlink signals to the terminal devices. Several base stations have overlapping broadcast regions, several terminal devices are located within the overlapped broadcast regions, the base stations transmit the downlink signals using a same frequency band, and some downlink signals transmitted by base stations having overlapping broadcast regions also overlap in time.

A system for wireless data transmission that uses a channel bandwidth, channel separation, and radio frequency power spectrum which is compatible with existing deployments of wireless voice services. The transmitted waveforms are thus compatible with existing cellular networks. However, the time domain digital coding, modulation, and power control schemes are optimized for data transmission. Existing cellular network sites can thus be used to provide a high speed service optimized for wireless data traffic without the need for new radio frequency planning, and without interfering with existing voice service deployments.

Upon waking from a sleep mode at the conclusion of a DRX off period, a baseband modem may transition to a low-power mode configured to receive and decode only a control channel, such as a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH). If the control channel indicates during a DRX on period that communication traffic will be transmitted to the baseband modem, then the baseband modem may transition to a full-power mode to receive the communication traffic. Otherwise, the baseband modem may transition back to the sleep mode. The low-power mode may be implemented by a dedicated set of hardware configured to draw less power than a full set of hardware configured to implement the high-power mode.

The fading frequency estimation method according to the present invention includes the steps, in which a radio base station arranges reference signals, using an arrangement format, in which the reference signals, which are used to estimate the fading frequency in the user terminal, are arranged in a relatively high density, in at least part of the radio resources allocated for a downlink shared data channel, and transmits allocation information of the radio resources for the downlink shared data channel to the user terminal, and the user terminal estimates the fading frequency based on the channel estimation values of the reference signals, and transmits the estimated fading frequency to the radio base station in response to a transmission request from the radio base station.
