The invention provides an insert for use in retaining an end portion of a cable in a socket. The insert has first and second ends and defines a central opening extending between the ends. A portion of the opening adjacent the first end of the insert has a diameter which forms a loose fit on the center wire of the cable, and the remainder of the opening is at least as large as this diameter so that during assembly a filler material can be entered into space around the center wire in the opening. The invention also provides an end assembly on a cable using the insert.

A fitting for securing to the end of a flat strop comprises a body formed with a through bore which is tapered for at least a greater part of its length, a correspondingly tapered plug accommodated within the bore, a screw-threaded retaining member engaging corresponding threads on the body so as to be screwed into position to engage the larger end of the plug to retain it in position in the body and an attachment portion forming part of the plug or the retaining member. The retaining member is preferably formed with an internally threaded, longitudinally-extending skirt which screws on to corresponding threads on the outer surface of the body and a bolt is inserted from the smaller end of the plug to engage a threaded bore in the retaining member.

A connector for making connection to an end of an electrical conductor cable to be pulled through conduits or the like comprises a centrally-bored inner connector member having a conical outer surface wedged into a correspondingly conical recess in an outer connector member, with an outer portion of the end of the conductor cable grasped between the two conical surfaces and an inner portion of the cable end gripped within the central bore of the inner connector member. The inner conical member is made of a material which is highly malleable with respect to the inner surface of the outer connector member and at least as malleable as the material of the cable, and sufficient wedging force is provided between the inner and outer connector members so that both the inner and outer portions of the conductor cable become embedded to a substantial extent in the material of the inner connector member. This embedding enhances the strength with which the inner and outer connector members grasp the inner and outer cable portions. The wedging action may be provided by the normal forces used to pull the cable. A preferred material for the inner connector member is aluminum of a purity of at least 80% and preferably greater than 95%, with an elongation of at least 20% and preferably greater than 30%, and a Brinell hardness number no greater than 40 and preferably less than 25.

A termination for the stranded cable used in a gas-insulated bus is disclosed, where the termination consists of an expander structure which wedges into a central area of the stranded cable and presses the stranded cable against an outer conductive retainer cylinder. The expander structure consists of a cylindrical double-ended body which receives sliding wedges at its opposite ends which are drawn together by the operation of an externally accessible bolt. The sliding wedges are keyed to the cylindrical member to prevent relative rotation of the sliding wedges relative to the cylindrical member as the wedges are drawn together.

A pulling eye assembly is adapted for attachment to the end of a communication cable whereby linear pull can be applied to the cable end to draw the cable into place in the air on poles or underground through conduit. The outer portion or sleeve of the assembly may also be used for pressurizing air or gas filled cables to exclude moisture.

An electrical connector is constructed by inserting the end of a stranded cable into a loosely fitted sleeve having diametrically opposed apertures. Thereafter, the sleeve is crimped for securement thereof to the cable. The crimping tool is provided with a punch section that moves through the sleeve apertures and in so doing pierces the cable by spreading the strands thereof, thereby forming a through passage for insertion of a mounting bolt that will be received by a threaded aperture in a terminal. During the crimping operation the sleeve is formed with an extensive flat surface area that will be in intimate contact with the terminal.

The present invention provides a fish tape for drawing electric wires into conduits and the like The body of the fish tape comprises a unitary sheath or jacket of plastic, such as polyethylene, extruded onto a small diameter central core of fine stranded polyester fibers. The core has great strength in tension but lacks the necessary resistance to erosion, the necessary stiffness characteristics and resistance to external influences and stresses to constitute a fish tape. The sheath provides wear resisting and anti-friction qualities which the core of itself lacks, and provides along with the core a selected or predetermined degree of stiffness or controlled flexibility for threading the tape through a conduit. The means employed on one end-to apply tension for pulling the tape and attached conductoris provided by an integral loop which in case of breakage or other injury is renewable. The loop is integral with one end of the tape. A means for renewably bonding a head or pulling eye to the front end of the composite body of the tape is provided by a small diameter coupling which has an eye at the forward end of the tape for hitching thereto the conductor to be pulled through the conduit. Both the connection of the pulling eye to the front end of the body of the tape and the connection of the loop to the rear end of the body of the tape are renewable with simple tools and simple manipulation. This makes possible a long useful life, not possessed to the same degree by any known non-metallic fish tape.

A method of connecting an attachment to the end of a fiberglass rod, tube or other profile. The end of the rod is first separated into a plurality of segments which are held apart from each other by a spacer-spreader. A tetrafluoroethylene tape is wound around the outside of the rod segments, with a substantial amount of separation between the edges of the adjacent tape windings. The rod end is then placed within a fitting and potting compound is poured into the end of the fitting to form simultaneously a plug which completely fills the area between the segments and a socket which completely fills the area between the rod and fitting. The tape forms a slip plane along which the rod is moved within the fitting to convert longitudinal tension into lateral compression and thereby transfer the load across the entire cross-section of the rod.
