A satellite crash sensor for use in a noisy area such as a crush zone has a crash dependent clock that uses an accumulated velocity signal derived from the acceleration signal, rather than the acceleration signal itself, to determine initiation and counting of the clock count. Successive velocity values are accumulated in an accumulated velocity value that is limited between zero and a maximum limit value. The clock count is incremented away from an initial zero value when the accumulated velocity value is greater than zero and back toward the zero value when the accumulated velocity value is equal to zero. The clock count is used as a measure of time from initiation of a possible crash event in the generation of a restraint deploy indicating signal in the satellite crash sensor.

A crash sensor (32, 36) senses crash acceleration and provides a crash acceleration signal (110, 160) indicative thereof. Crash velocity and crash displacement are determined (118, 168) in response to the crash acceleration signal. A first stage (90, 94) of the multistage actuatable occupant restraining system is actuated when the determined crash velocity as a function of crash displacement exceeds a low threshold (130, 132, 180, 182). A transverse accelerometer (34) senses transverse crash acceleration. The transverse acceleration as a function of the crash displacement is compared (226, 278) against a transverse threshold (268). The value of the low threshold (130, 180) is switched to a different value (132, 182) when the transverse acceleration exceeds the transverse threshold.

The enable input to the door lock module is then connected in common with the a park brake lamp switch. When the park brake lamp switch is closed by setting the park brake and activates the park brake lamp, the ignition position feed signal on the enable input is sunk by the switch and the potential level on the enable Is reduced, enabling the door lock module to operate as though the ignition switch had been moved to off.

The silhouette is divided into two segments and a separate ellipse is positioned to approximate the shape of each segment. The parameters that define the location and size of the two ellipses form a feature vector for the object. A Bayesian classification function utilizes the feature vector to determine the probability that the object fits which each of a plurality of classes. A class for the object is determined based on the probabilities. This method can be used to control operation of an air bag in the motor vehicle in response to the class of the object on the seat.

A miniature simulation of the simulated animal can be retained by the elongate seat belt cover in a pocket, and a strip of ultra-smooth material can be affixed to the elongate seat belt cover and pillow. Still further, a speaker and a means for causing the speaker to provide audible communications to a vehicular occupant can be incorporated for providing, for example, automatic reminders to a vehicular occupant to fasten his or her seat belt. Even further still, the elongate seat belt cover and pillow can cooperate to simulate a game projectile and a striking implement.
