Abstract: The disclosure provides rotary machines that include, in one embodiment, a rotatable shaft defining a central axis A, the shaft having a first end and a second end. The shaft can have a first hub disposed thereon with a plurality of cavities. At least one contour is slidably received into an arcuate cavity in an exterior surface of the hub. The contour has a convex outer surface that cooperates with an inwardly facing curved surface of a housing to form a working volume.

Abstract: This patent discloses thrust vectoring ignition chamber engine in which ignition chamber is an annular cylinder having nozzles mounted such that during fuel suction phase they are sealed and during ignition of fuel they are unsealed so that hot jets of ignited fuel escaping through nozzles cause coupled rotatory motion on the ignition chamber. Engine uses specially designed dwell barrel cam mechanism for two phase suction and compression of fuel which facilitates the separation of fuel valve from ignition chamber. Flywheel mounted on extension of ignition chamber functions as output of the engine. Timing of electrically controlled nozzle seal and fuel valve can be adjusted so that each half rotation of flywheel completes three phases namely fuel/air suction, compression and combustion, instead of two rotations as required in engine according to prior art. This engine can give improved power boost by firing for every half revolution.

Abstract: A rotary engine having an outer body having an internal cavity with a peripheral wall having an insert opening defined therethrough in communication with the internal cavity, and a plurality of coolant passages defined through the peripheral wall in proximity of the insert opening, a rotor body rotatable within the internal cavity, and an insert removably received in the insert opening of the peripheral wall, the insert having a subchamber defined therein communicating with the internal cavity, with a minimum width of the insert opening being at least 0.75 inches. An outer body for a rotary engine and a method of inspecting in an internal cavity in an outer body of a rotary engine are also discussed; also, a rotary engine including a fuel injector having a tip received in the injector hole of the peripheral wall without protruding in the insert opening.

Abstract: A rotary engine includes an insert having a pilot subchamber defined therein and communicating with the internal cavity of the engine. A pilot fuel injector has a tip in communication with the pilot subchamber. An ignition element extends into an element cavity defined through the insert adjacent the pilot subchamber. The element cavity is in communication with the pilot subchamber through a communication opening defined in the insert between the element cavity and the pilot subchamber. The communication opening is smaller than a portion of the ignition element adjacent the communication opening such as to prevent the portion of the ignition element from completely passing through the communication opening upon breaking off of the portion of the ignition element from a remainder of the ignition element. An outer body for a rotary engine and a method of combusting fuel in a rotary engine are also provided.

Abstract: An engine includes a housing defining an annular bore and a piston assembly disposed within the annular bore. The engine includes at least one valve configured to oscillate between a first position within the annular bore to allow the piston assembly to travel from a first location proximate to the at least one valve to a second location distal to the at least one valve and a second position to define a combustion chamber relative to the piston assembly at the second location. The engine includes an exhaust gas port disposed in fluid communication with the combustion chamber and a fuel distribution assembly configured to mix fuel from a fuel source and air from an air source into a fuel and air mixture at a location external to the combustion chamber and to deliver the fuel and air mixture to the combustion chamber.

Abstract: A compound cycle engine having a rotary internal combustion engine, a first turbine, and a second turbine is discussed. The exhaust port of the internal combustion engine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine upstream of its rotor. The rotors of the first turbine and of each rotary unit drive a common load. The inlet of the second turbine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine downstream of its rotor. The first turbine is configured as a velocity turbine and the first turbine has a pressure ratio smaller than that of the second turbine. A method of compounding a rotary engine is also discussed.

Abstract: A rotary engine having an insert in a peripheral wall of the stator body, the insert being made of a material having a greater heat resistance than that of the peripheral wall, having a subchamber defined therein and having an inner surface, the subchamber communicating with the cavity through at least one opening defined in the inner surface and having a shape forming a reduced cross-section adjacent the opening, a pilot fuel injector having a tip received in the subchamber, an ignition element having a tip received in the subchamber, and a main fuel injector extending through the stator body and having a tip communicating with the cavity at a location spaced apart from the insert. The subchamber has a volume corresponding to from 5% to 25% of a sum of the minimum volume and the volume of the subchamber. A method of injecting heavy fuel into a Wankel engine is also discussed.

The methods can include rotating a pair of cylindrical members in relation to a fixed member about a center rod along a shared axis within a housing extending between the pair of cylindrical members.
