Abstract: An epicyclic gear system includes an input sun gear configured to receive rotational input from a turbine of a turbo charger. A first set of planet gears is distributed around and meshes with the input sun gear. A carrier holds the first set of planet gears and defines a rotational axis about which the carrier rotates. A second set of planet gears is mounted to the carrier. An output sun gear is included, wherein the second set of planet gears are distributed around and mesh with the output sun. The output sun gear is configured to deliver rotational power to an internal combustion engine. The carrier is configured to selectively be driven by a variable speed drive to regulate output to the output sun over a range of input rotational speeds of the input sun gear.

Abstract: Exhaust gases from an engine, input to turbo-compounder, drive a bladed turbine rotor therein, which drives a multi-phase AC generator, the output of which is used to electrically drive a multi-phase induction motor, the rotor of which is mechanically coupled to the engine, so as to provide for recovering power to the engine. The multi-phase AC generator may be coupled to the engine either by closure of a contactor, engagement of an electrically-controlled clutch, or by control of either a solid-state switching or control system or an AC excitation signal, when the frequency (fGENERATOR) of the multi-phase AC generator meets or exceeds that (fMOTOR) of the multi-phase induction motor.

Abstract: A compound cycle engine having a rotary internal combustion engine, a first turbine, and a second turbine is discussed. The exhaust port of the internal combustion engine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine upstream of its rotor. The rotors of the first turbine and of each rotary unit drive a common load. The inlet of the second turbine is in fluid communication with the flowpath of the first turbine downstream of its rotor. The first turbine is configured as a velocity turbine and the first turbine has a pressure ratio smaller than that of the second turbine. A method of compounding a rotary engine is also discussed.

Abstract: An assembly for an aircraft having a propeller, including a wheel well for a retracted landing gear, first and second cooling ducts; and an engine assembly having an engine shaft configured for driving engagement with the propeller, the engine assembly including a coolant circulation system for circulation of a liquid coolant, a lubricant circulation system for circulation of a lubricant, a first heat exchanger in fluid communication with at least the coolant circulation system, and a second heat exchanger in fluid communication with at least the lubricant circulation system. Each heat exchanger is positioned and configured for receiving a cooling airflow from the respective cooling duct. The wheel well is located between the heat exchangers. A method of cooling a lubricant and a liquid coolant of an engine assembly is also discussed.

Abstract: An aircraft engine assembly having a turbo-compounded internal combustion engine having an engine shaft. A coolant cooler is fluidly connected to a coolant circuitry of the internal combustion engine and to the environment. A plenum is connected with the environment via the coolant cooler and via an air outlet. A fan is disposed adjacent the air outlet and is operable to drive an airflow from the environment into the plenum via the coolant cooler. The fan is spaced apart from the internal combustion engine in a direction perpendicular to the engine shaft. A method of defining a cooling air circulation is also discussed.

Abstract: An exhaust gas arrangement includes an exhaust gas system for conveying an exhaust gas stream. The exhaust gas system includes a turbine and an exhaust gas treatment system. The exhaust gas arrangement further includes a working fluid circulation circuit connected to the exhaust gas system for recovery of energy from the exhaust gas stream. The working fluid circulation circuit includes a first heat exchanger which is arranged at a waste heat source for heat exchange between the waste heat source and a working fluid in the working fluid circulation circuit, and a second heat exchanger positioned in the exhaust gas system for heat exchange between the exhaust gas and the working fluid. The second heat exchanger is positioned downstream of the turbine and upstream of a particle filter in the exhaust gas treatment system. An internal combustion engine system and a vehicle including such an exhaust gas arrangement are also disclosed.

Abstract: A system for power integration is provided. The system for power integration includes a planetary gear system with a ring gear, a sun gear and a carrier. A supercharger compressor is mechanically coupled to the ring gear, a secondary turbine is mechanically coupled to the sun gear, and a hybrid energy device is mechanically coupled to the carrier. The system is configured for an internal combustion engine (ICE) to be mechanically coupled to the hybrid energy device through the carrier and a first clutch, and a brake may be mechanically coupled to the supercharger compressor via a band brake or second clutch. The system integrates power between the supercharger compressor, secondary turbine, hybrid energy device and ICE such that enhanced fuel economy is provided.
