A piston ring for sealing a cylinder wall to a piston body is provided. The piston ring includes a ring body of an elastically deformable material which extends substantially circumferentially around an axis and has an inner face that faces the axis. The inner face includes a plurality of axially spaced and radially inwardly extending contact features. The ring body configured to bias the contact features into engagement with the piston body to establish a seal therebetween. At least one of the contact features extends substantially continuously around a circumference for establishing a substantially continuous seal around the piston body, and at least one of the contact features is non-continuous and has at least one recessed area for allowing the passage of oil and gas therethrough.

A low friction coating for an internal combustion engine and a method of forming a low friction surface on at least one of the engine's friction-sensitive components. In one form, a solid lubricant precursor additive is combined with motor oil such that upon work being performed on the combination by adjacently-interacting engine components, the solid lubricant tribochemically reacts to form a friction-reducing coating or film. In one preferred form, the coating or film is triboformed on a cylinder bore or a liner configured to fit within the bore. The reciprocating movement between the cylinder or liner and a piston and/or piston rings promotes in-situ formation of the layer after the engine has already been manufactured rather than during engine fabrication or assembly.

The first pattern is designed to provide a predetermined storage volume for oil used to lubricate a piston 22 which is slidingly engaged in the cylinder 19. The second pattern is different to the first pattern in that it provides little or no storage capacity for the oil. The second pattern is applied to the wall 28 of each cylinder 19 at one or more positions where impingement of unburned fuel against the cylinder wall 28 is to be expected. The reduced storage volume of the second pattern reduces the volume of unburned fuel that can be transferred from the cylinder 19 to the oil supply of the engine 10.

A restoration sleeve for the remanufacture of cast iron engine blocks or aluminum blocks with cast iron liners includes a sleeve formed of cast iron and having a relatively thin wall, a selected length, an outer diameter to achieve a non-interference fit within an overbored cylinder, an inner diameter equal to the original specifications of the original manufacturer of the engine block, and a helical cross hatched inner surface finish. The sleeves are manufactured by placing an unfinished sleeve in a boring fixture, boring the inner surface to a selected diameter, transferring the bored sleeve to a honing fixture, and honing the inner surface to the required diameter and surface finish. An adhesive is applied to the restoration sleeve and the overbored block cylinders, and the sleeves are inserted into the overbored cylinders wherein the adhesive is allowed to cure to thereby adhesively retain the sleeves within the block. A fluorescent dye is used in the adhesive for inspection by ultraviolet light to insure continuous and complete application of the adhesive to the restoration sleeve and the bored cylinder surface.
