A vehicle odometer is provided that records highway mileage traveled by a vehicle. The odometer includes a sensor for selectively activating and deactivating the recording of distance traveled by the vehicle. The sensor may be a speed sensor that is connected to a city odometer and a highway odometer. The sensor activates the city odometer to record distance traveled below a predetermined speed on the city odometer, and deactivates the highway odometer below the predetermined speed. The sensor deactivates the city odometer and activates the highway odometer at speeds above the predetermined speed to record the distance traveled above the predetermined speed on the highway odometer.

This invention reduces the navigation error associated with the use of wheel sensor based DR as an augmentation to GPS. In order to derive accurate heading information from the wheel speeds, the distance between the centers of the tires, or the wheel track, must be known to high precision. Unfortunately, the wheel track may not be precisely known whereby different classes of the same vehicle type can produce variations of up to 5%. The current invention removes the error growth associated with wheel track error by automatically estimating and calibrating the wheel track. The wheel track is measured by computing a heading rate directly from the GPS Doppler measurements, and comparing it with the heading rate derived from the wheel sensors whereby subsequent refinements to the estimated wheel track are computed by filtering each measured track.

A method is provided for preventing odometer fraud on a vehicle having a multiplex ring including a plurality of vehicle control modules in electrical communication with each other. The multiplex ring includes a cluster control module with an odometer display. The method includes: a) displaying an odometer mileage variable; b) periodically storing the displayed odometer mileage variable in a non-volatile memory location in the cluster control module; and c) periodically storing the displayed odometer mileage variable in a non-volatile memory location in at least one of the vehicle control modules other than the cluster control module, thereby increasing the level of difficulty of odometer tampering.

A method of determining a directional change of a vehicle carries out dead-reckoning for which it utilizes sensors provided on two wheels. In order to compensate for differences between the wheels, the method utilizes given parameters in processing the data from the wheel sensors. The invention provides an extension of the method by estimating the parameters during normal operation of the vehicle, so that they are adapted to changing circumstances encountered by the vehicle. Estimation is performed by comparing data from the wheel sensors with independently determined directional data for a given period of time.

Method and apparatus for modifying an odometer reading in a vehicle navigation system to compensate for odometer errors. A first distance measurement is obtained from the odometer, and a second distance measurement is obtained from at least one other sensor. The difference between the first and second distance measurements is determined and an adjustment amount is generated in response thereto. A modification factor is then adjusted by the adjustment amount, the modification factor being for modifying the odometer reading. The odometer reading is then modified with the modification factor. A method and apparatus for selecting a pulse rate setting in a vehicle navigation system to correspond to a pulse rate associated with the odometer are also described. A first distance measurement is obtained from the odometer and a second distance measurement is obtained from at least one other sensor. The difference between the first and second distance measurements is then determined. The pulse rate setting is changed to correspond to the odometer pulse rate if the difference is greater than a threshold level, and is left unchanged if the difference is less than the threshold level.

The device includes apparatus for measuring a quantity which is indicative of the instantaneous vertical velocity of a wheel relative to the body. Using this quantity, the vertical component of the wheel displacement is eliminated so that in the event of a bumpy road surface a higher accuracy is obtained for determining the displacement of the vehicle body.
