摘要: A method for predicting a property of a matter of biological origin, such as biological fluid, containing water, where the biological matter may be approximated to contain two compartments where one compartment has a proportionally larger or smaller amount of water than the other compartment having the property of interest. The method establishes a training set in the near-infrared (NIR) region with independent quantification of the property of the matter using known techniques. The training set is mathematically analyzed according to a correlation developed by regression analysis after employment of a ratio pre-processing technique. The result is a mathematical transformation equation which quantitatively relates spectral intensities at specific wavelengths to the property of interest. This transformation equation may be applied to unknown samples so as to predict their properties, thereby eliminating need for the reference method except for validation or recalibration. There is rapid and accurate prediction of the property of the unknown sample, which may be the property of hematocrit or hemoglobin concentration in whole animal blood.

摘要: The present invention, in one form, is a method for determining and applying a ZCAL correction vector to the channel outputs from the detector array in a multi-slice CT system. More specifically, and in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, the signal gain for each detector cell, or channel, at multiple z-axis locations is measured. For each channel, a correction polynomial Q.sub.n is fitted to the signal variation curve as a function of z-axis position so that the correction polynomial value multiplied by its channel signal produces a constant value over the operational range of z-axis positions. Beam positions (Z.sub.r) are measured as a function of each position reference signal (D.sub.r) and the Z position of the beam at the sensor channel and the location of the focal spot are determined. The z-axis location for each channel and the ZCAL correction vector are then determined. The ZCAL correction vector is then multiplied by the channel signal to calibrate the channel signal.

摘要: A hand-held, battery-powered medical questionnaire presentation device is provided for use by a patient. The device has means for displaying questions to the patient, a limited number of keys by which the patient can enter answers, and a memory device for storing the patient's answers. The device is controlled by a pre-programmed microcomputer which stores in a memory the text of user instructions, medical or health-related questions, and words to be used in printed reports. The microcomputer is programmed to tally the patient's answers and, on the basis of that information and objective data supplied by a medical staffer, to present an evaluation of aspects of the patient's medical condition or health status. The evaluation may consist of recommendations for tests, an analysis of the patient's general medical condition, an analysis of the patient's surgical risk, an analysis of the patient's functional health status, recommendations for counseling the patient, recommendations for health-related lifestyle improvements, or any other conclusions which may be inferred from the patient's responses. The questions and the answer-evaluation software are stored in a readily removable and replaceable integrated circuit module. A variety of specialized questionnaires targeting particular health risks and medical conditions may be provided on interchangeable modules.

摘要: A system for effecting a desired modification in the shape of a pre-existing object to which access is restricted comprises, in accordance with the present invention, a computer, a first data generating device, a second data generating device, a display, an instruction input device and an output device. The first data generating device is operatively connected to the computer for providing the computer with electrically encoded data specifying a three-dimensional surface of the object, while the second data generating device is operatively connected to the computer for providing the computer with electrically encoded data specifying a curvilinear contour of the object. The display is responsive to signals from the computer for displaying a three-dimensional graphic representation of the object in accordance with data from the first data generating device and the second data generating device. The instruction input device operatively serves for instructing the computer to modify the three-dimensional representation of the object on the display and for selecting a modification of the three-dimensional representation which represents a desired object preparation. The output device is operatively coupled to the computer for issuing an output signal to effectuate a limitation in motion of a preparation instrument relative to the object so that the object is provided with the desired object preparation.

摘要: Devices and methods for providing emergency information. This emergency information device is a portable unit which may be carried to an emergency site. It is operative in response to parameter entries by the rescuer according to the victim's condition to provide sequential procedural displays of medical standard rescue steps for assisting the rescuer in carrying out the correct rescue operation. The standard rescue procedure is stored in a microprocessor which, if necessary, can be re-programmed to update to a new rescue standard procedure. It includes a recall feature operative for reverse searching of any desired step in the display if the condition of the victim changes during the rescue operation. Additionally, distinct tone signals are emitted at selected steps of the rescue operation procedure to assist the rescuer in memorizing and conducting such steps in the rescue.

摘要: A problem solving expert system is provided which is particularly useful in managing the health care of individual patients. A description of a problem (e.g., medical condition) and a proposed solution therefor (e.g., medical procedure) is entered via a user interface. A topical library is searched to identify information relevant to the problem and proposed solution. Access to the identified information is available in either a full text or synopsis format, to assist a user in assessing the appropriateness of the proposed solution. An inference engine provides a recommendation to the user as to the appropriateness of the proposed solution based on information entered via the user interface and rules associated with the inference engine. A user can interact with the inference engine in either a structured or guided mode. The structured mode is directed to inexperienced users and dynamically generates questions in response to previous answers provided by the user to enable the inference engine to make its recommendation. The guided mode is directed to experienced users and provides a predefined questionnaire enabling the user to decide which questions to answer in order to obtain a recommendation.

摘要: A CT scanner (10) has an x-ray source (12) which transmits a plurality (N) of x-ray fans across an examination region (14) to a plurality of rings of radiation detectors (28). An adjustable septum (80) adjusts a gap between the fan beams and outer collimators (82) adjust the width of the fan beams such that the effective spacing and width are adjusted. The x-ray source rotates around the examination region as a subject support (32) moves longitudinally through the examination region such that the x-ray fans move along interleaved spiral trajectories. Radiation attenuation data from each of the x-ray fans is combined and reconstructed into a plurality of images along parallel slices orthogonal to the longitudinal axis. The spacing between the x-ray beams is adjusted relative to the effective pitch of the spirals such that the leading edges of the x-ray fans intersect a common transverse plane at 180.degree./N angular intervals around the longitudinal axis.
