A reactor for the oxidation of unburned and partially burned components in the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine comprising a chamber which is substantially circular in cross-sections perpendicular to its axis, one or more inlet pipes which pass a mixture of exhaust gas and air substantially tangentially into the chamber near to one end thereof, and an outlet pipe near to the other end of the chamber and which is so arranged that exhaust gas leaves the chamber substantially tangentially. The tangential inlet and tangential outlet of gases minimizes energy losses in the gas passing through the reactor. The ratio of the cross-sectional areas of the inlet pipe(s) to reactor chamber is preferably from 1:9 to 25:36, and similar ranges of cross-sectional area ratios are preferred for the outlet pipe and chamber. The ratio of the length of the reaction chamber to diameter is preferably from 1:1 to 4:1.The chamber may be cylindrical or divergent from inlet end to outlet end and may be thermally insulated.

A regulator, particularly for an internal combustion engine, includes a member with variable impedance surface characteristics, contacted by a tracer element. The member has such a material composition and distribution at its surface as to feature a varying impedance characteristic across its surface layer, the varying impedance characteristic representing the value of a function of two independently varying physical quantitites. The regulator has means to impart relative displacement between the member and the tracer element, in two different directions of the surface of the member, the magnitudes of the displacements being respectively proportional to the two independently varying physical quantities. The tracer element and the member are connected as part of an indicating circuit which senses the varying impedance characteristic depending on the changing point of contact betwen the tracer element and the member to give an output signal proportional to the value of the known function of the two independently varying physical quantities.

A device for injecting air so as to admix same with the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine to reduce the emission of pollutants in the atmosphere. The injection is caused to take place in the immediate vicinity of the exhaust valve, and a kind of slide valve is obtained, by suitably shaping the valve stem and the valve guide, so as to inject the diluent air when the exhaust valve is open and to prevent such an injection when the exhaust valve is closed. By so doing, air is admixed with the exhaust gases in timed sequence and when the exhaust gases still retain their own sensible heat.

A system for diminishing atmospherical pollution due to the discharge of unburned gases and volatile fuels from motor cars in which an internal combustion engine already equipped with ducts connecting the base chamber of the engine with the intake manifold and the fuel tank has the end portion of the duct which connects the fuel tank to the inside chamber of the engine base is joined to the end portion of the duct connecting the intake manifold with the chamber. Hence, when the engine is not running, all the gases and vapors are stored in the interior chamber of the engine base, whereas, as soon as the engine runs, all gases and vapors are sucked by the engine cylinders to be burned therein.
