摘要: A method of coating of steel products such as plate and sheet using an aluminum-zinc coating alloy includes modifying the coating bath with a particulate compound constituent in effective amounts to control the spangle facet size of the coated product, improve tension bend rust stain performance, improve coated surface appearance when brushed, and coated product paintability. Constituents include borides such as titanium boride and aluminum borides, carbides such as titanium carbide, and aluminides such as titanium aluminide. The method produces a coated steel product that does not require temper rolling for painting.

摘要: A dual phase high strength cold rolled steel having controlled amounts of carbon, manganese, and molybdenum is used as a starting material in a galvanizing/galvannealing process. Conditions in a multi-zone furnace of the galvanizing line can be controlled in a conventional manner while still effectively coating the high strength steel. A dual phase high strength steel product is made having a uniform coating of zinc in spite of the high manganese content of the steel.

摘要: A system and method for detecting molten slag in a tap stream between a steel making basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and corresponding ladle. BOFs are used in the manufacture of steel. An infrared (IR) imaging or detecting device is used to image/view the BOF-to-ladle tap stream, the steam transmitting energy indicative of whether molten steel and/or slag is in the stream at a given time. The imaging device uses mainly long IR wavelengths (e.g. wavelengths of from about 8 to 14 .mu.m) when imaging the molten tap stream, because these wavelengths are less susceptible to being blocked or absorbed by airborne gases and particles frequently found in BOF environments. In certain embodiments, all IR wavelengths other than those greater than about 8 .mu.m are filtered out and are not used to detect slag in the tap stream.

摘要: A removable cover for encasing freight having an oversized portion of freight positioned on a bed of a freight car is shown including an interior insulated space for encasing the freight, openings through which the oversized portion of freight extends, and sidewalls having pockets of insulation shaped to receive the oversized portion of the freight. The sidewalls are movably attached to the removable cover and positioned to be moved to a closed position that covers the openings and encases the oversized portion of freight extending through said openings within the pockets of insulation. The removable cover further includes a seal that extends between the bed of the freight car and the removable cover, and the seal includes a granular insulation material in which the removable cover is imbedded.

摘要: Rolled articles such as hot rolled or cold rolled and annealed sheet and/or strip include effective amounts of vanadium in low carbon steels to produce an improved bake hardenable product especially adapted for automotive use. The use of vanadium in the alloy steel chemistry controls bake hardenability, permits solution annealing at lower temperatures in its manufacturing sequence and specifies a composition range which is more easily cast within desired limits and causes less variation in final mechanical properties. Controlling the vanadium to carbon ratio to maintain a value of about 10 or greater also improves aging resistance.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method of completely recovering nickel and zinc metal from multiple plating process waste streams by first separating the waste streams into a clean, relatively constant flow and/or concentration fraction and a dirty, variable flow and/or concentration fraction. Metal is recovered from the clean fraction by ion-exchange so as to concentrate the extracted metals for direct return to the plating bath. The effluent from the ion-exchange step is then blended with the dirty, variable flow and concentration fraction. This blended flow is first neutralized and then precipitated in a two-stage process using a sodium hydroxide solution. The resultant slurry containing the metal precipitate is filtered to yield a filter cake containing recovered nickel and zinc. This filter cake can then be further processed to recover the metal for reintroduction into the plating bath or for other uses.
