A process for the preparation of 4,4'-isopropylidene bis(2,6-dibromophenol), also known as tetrabrombisphenol A, that dramatically reduces the formation of alkyl bromide by-products. Bisphenol A is brominated with a C.sub.3 to C.sub.5 n-alcohol in a water mixture to suppress the formation of alkyl bromides. The bisphenol A is brominated between 15.degree. C. and 25.degree. C. and then heated at a 55.degree. C. to 70.degree. C. to insure bromination is complete. The tetrabrombisphenol A is then filtered from the reaction mixture and dried. Tetrabromobisphenol A produced from this process typically has a melting point of 180.degree. C. or higher, and is typically greater than 98% pure. Hydrogen peroxide is optionally combined with the reactants to reduce the amount of added bromine necessary for the bromination of the tetrabromobisphenol A.

The system utilizes an apparatus which penetrates to the prescribed depth, forms a cavity at that depth, fills the cavity and withdraws sealing the filled cavity encapsulating the fumigant at the prescribed depth. The apparatus is particularly useful in combating pathogenic fungi such as Armillaria Mellea.

The invention includes methods for preparing halohydrins and epoxides. A method of preparing halohydrins can include exposing (R1CHXCH2O—)2SO2 to R2COOH to produce R1CHXCH2COOR2 and hydrolyzing the R1CHXCH2COOR2 to produce the halohydrin R1CHXCH2OH. R1 and R2 can be the same or different single elements and/or organic groups and X can be a halogen. A method of preparing an epoxide can include combining a sulfuric acid containing solution with a halogen to produce a first mixture and exposing the first mixture to trifluoropropene to produce a second mixture. The second mixture can be combined with acetic acid to produce an acetyl halohydrin of trifluoropropene and the acetyl halohydrin can be hydrolyzed to form a halohydrin of trifluoropropene. The halohydrin can be converted to a trifluoropropyl epoxide.

A biocatalytic process to produce optically active phenylalanine analogs from arylacrylic acids is disclosed in which Rhodotorula graminis yeast containing phenylalanine ammonia-lyase introduces a molecule of ammonia stereoselectively onto the double bond of a 3-substituted acrylic acid. The substituent at the 3-position of the 3-substituted acrylic acid includes, for example, aromatic rings such as substituted phenyl groups, five member aromatic heterocyclics, and six member aromatic heterocyclics.
