A multiaxial laminated non-woven fabric is comprised of tows used as a constituent material and overlaid and bonded with one another. The starting material tow has crimps and has total tex of not more than 300,000 and tow-constituting filaments have an average fineness of not more than 3 tex. A three-dimensional moulded products from the multiaxial non-woven fabric is also provided, and a method for stably producing the non-woven tow fabric while ensuring quality comprises subjecting tows multiaxially and obliquely overlaid with one another to bonding treatment, such as needle punching, or heat treatment while they are held by pins of an overlaying machine.

The present invention provides a split polyethylene stretched material having a tensile strength of at least 0.7 GPa when twisted in the range of 50-500 times/m, which material is produced by subjecting a polyethylene having an intrinsic viscosity of 5-50 dl/g as measured at 135.degree. C. in decalin, i.e. an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene to stretching and then subjecting the stretched polyethylene to splitting, as well as a process for producing said material. The split polyethylene stretched material according to the present invention has a large surface area and accordingly can be easily laminated to other materials, and has a high strength and flexibility.

A process is provided for the continuous production of a high-strength and high-modulus polyethylene material having excellent properties. According to the process, powder composed of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene powder as a principal component is subjected to compression molding, rolling and stretching. The polyethylene powder has an intrinsic viscosity of 5-50 dl/g as measured at 135.degree. C. in decalin. The compression molding is carried out by feeding the polyethylene powder between endless belts arranged in an opposing up-and-down relation, and conveying the polyethylene powder while holding the same between the endless belts and at the same time, continuously compression molding the polyethylene powder at a temperature lower than its melting point by a compressing means provided inside of the endless belts. In at least one of the compression molding step and rolling step, an olefin polymer having a molecular weight lower than the polyolefin polymer is concurrently processed.

A bundle of fibers fed from a stuffer box longitudinally in a corrugated form is wrapped with a breathable heat resistant fabric to form a continuous belt-like shape and then introduced into and drawn out of a thermal treatment region by the aid of inlet and outlet ducts and guide channel in a heat-treatment chamber into which is supplied a heating medium comprising one of non-condensable gas, superheated steam, and a mixture of said non-condensable gas and said superheated steam. The chamber includes a high-pressure portion and a low-pressure portion disposed on opposite sides of the guide channel. The heating medium flows longitudinally along the inlet and outlet ducts in opposite directions towards outsides and transversely from the high-pressure portion to the low-pressure portion across the guide channel, whereby the fibers wrapped with the breathable heat resistant fabric is thermally treated. The heating medium used for the thermal treatment is recirculated into the high-pressure portion after having been pressurized and heated.

A reticular web of thermoplastic resin composed of split or slit fibers is longitudinally fed around a system of nip rollers as it is transversely spread along its selvages which then longitudinally shorten into contact with small-diameter end portions of one of the nip rollers. At least one dimensionally stable thread is attached to and along each of the web selvages to reinforce the latter. The web thus laterally spread is caused to heat-shrink at its middle portion on a heated drum until the middle portion is of substantially the same length as that of the selvages. Each of the selvages including the thread has a basis weight which is substantially the same as or smaller than that of the middle portion. The selvages of the reticular web thus treated are rendered dimensionally stable for guidance of the web in a manner to keep the latter constant widthwise while the web is wound around or reeled out from a take-up roll.

An improved method for effecting cross-lamination of wide warp and weft webs is provided, wherein a continuous row of cut weft webs having a length corresponding to the width of the warp web to be cross-laminated thereto and arranged in side by side relationship is temporarily prepared on a warp material which is (1) a belt means from which said row of weft webs is transferred onto a warp web in order to be fixed thereto for effecting cross-lamination, (2) a warp web backed up by a belt means from which said row is peeled off in the state loaded on the warp web in order to be fixed thereto for effecting cross-lamination, or (3) a warp web itself to which said row is fixed for effecting cross-lamination, so that the warp material travelling crosswise over the cut weft web at a vertical distance apart therefrom and having been wetted with a liquid having adhesion property to the surface thereof facing said cut weft webs is subjected to successive reciprocating vertical motions so as to touch and pick up the cut weft webs one by one by temporary adhesion to the warp material arranged in side by side relationship, due to the adhesion property of said liquid wetting the surface of the warp material.

The present invention provides a prepreg obtained by stretching a material including, as a main component, an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene having an intrinsic viscosity of 5-50 dl/g as measured at 135.degree. C. in decalin, to a total draw ratio of at least 20, subjecting the resulting stretched polyethylene material to a splitting treatment, and impregnating the resulting material with a thermosetting resin, and a process for producing said prepreg. The split stretched polyethylene material has improved adhesion to the impregnant resin and can be used as a good base material for prepreg.

A pair of stretching pulleys are rotatably mounted on a pair of support plates within a housing. A belt is wound around the upper part of the stretching pulley and a number of turn pulleys. A film introduced onto the stretching pulley is held between the belt and the stretching pulley and is transferred. Air flow generated by a fan and heated with a heater is blown against the film through a louver and circulates through bellows mounted to the housing to return to the fan. The stretching pulley is partially cooled in a water bath. The support plates are rotatably connected to screw shafts, thereby changing a distance and angle between the plates. The stretch width or stretch ratio of the film is thus adjusted with the change of the distance and angle.
