An internal combustion engine of the "stratified charge" type has for the or each cylinder a primary ignition chamber in the cylinder head which communicates via a throat with its corresponding cylinder. The primary ignition chamber has a generally round concave upper portion, a generally frusto-conical lower side portion and a flat bottom surface towards which the lower side portion tapers. The lower side portion, flat bottom surface and throat are formed in a plug member seated in the cylinder head. The primary ignition chamber has a tapped hole for a sparking plug and an injection hole for a fuel injection nozzle. The throat opens at one end into the primary ignition chamber through the flat bottom surface thereof and runs obliquely to its other end where it communicates with a shallow recess formed in the upper surface of the crown of the piston. During the compression stroke air drawn into the cylinder during the suction stroke is forced into the primary ignition chamber through the throat, past the injection hole to the sparking plug and rotates in the chamber about an axis through the central portion of the chamber perpendicular to the cylinder axis.

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine of the liquid-fuel-injection compression-ignition type, having a fuel pump arranged to deliver fuel under supply pressure via a pressure-reducing valve to a pressure chamber of an injection plug, the said plug having an injection valve arranged to open in response to the pressure in the pressure chamber and controlling the injection of fuel from the chamber through the nozzle into the associated combustion chamber. The pressure-reducing valve is of the spring-loaded-piston variable-orifice type and when operative controls the fuel pressure in the pressure chamber, and hence the injection pressure, to a predetermined reduced value for the purpose of reducing engine noise during periods of idling. Means is provided however for rendering the pressurereducing valve inoperative when full injection pressure is required, either by bypassing the pressure-reducing valve altogether so that the fuel pump delivery passes directly to the pressure chamber throughout the whole of each pump delivery stroke, or by bypassing the restricted orifice of the pressurereducing valve during the final stage only of each delivery stroke of the fuel pump. In either case the bypassing means may be operated by a running control member of the engine, for example a fuel or speed control member.

In a further modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the buttress wall of a single cylinder head interconnects the upper and lower head faces, water entering the head at the cylinder side remote from a liquid-injection combustion pocket, passing above the cylinder bore via an aperture in the lower part of the buttress wall and over lowered portions of the wall on either side of the combustion pocket to an exit duct in the side face of the head.

An internal combustion engine of reciprocating-piston type with injection of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, provided with catalytic means for initiating the combustion of the air/fuel charge in the combustion chamber of the or each cylinder. The major part of the combustion chamber of each cylinder is afforded by a recess formed in the piston crown, and a catalytic element of mesh, grid, perforated or sintered or other construction, is carried by the piston in a position at least partly overlying the said recess, the fuel being injected into the said recess to contact and pass through the catalytic element, being ignited by its contact with the catalytic element.
