摘要: A piston capable of reducing undesirable “knock,” reducing hydrocarbon emissions, and providing more complete combustion, is provided. The piston includes a multilayer coating having a thickness of 500 microns or less disposed on an upper combustion surface. The coating includes a bond layer including nickel disposed on the upper combustion surface. A thermal barrier layer including a ceramic composition is disposed on the bond layer. A sealant layer formed of metal is disposed on the thermal barrier layer. A catalytic layer including at least one of platinum, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium is disposed on the sealant layer. The catalytic layer can be disposed on select regions or the entire upper combustion surface to promote combustion through a catalyzed reaction.

摘要: A glow member, preferably in the shape of a ring, assists ignition and combustion of a fuel used in an internal combustion engine. A fuel injection valve injects a plurality of fuel jets directly into a combustion chamber during operation of the engine so that the fuel jets are aimed to the proximity of the glow member such that ignition of fuel in each fuel jet is assisted by the glow member. The glow member is made from high temperature materials and can include catalytic materials to further promote combustion. The glow member can be actively heated, for example by an electric current, in addition to being passively heated by the heat generated within the combustion chamber by the combustion of the fuel therein.

摘要: An internal combustion engine of reciprocating-piston type with injection of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, provided with catalytic means for initiating the combustion of the air/fuel charge in the combustion chamber of the or each cylinder. The major part of the combustion chamber of each cylinder is afforded by a recess formed in the piston crown, and a catalytic element of mesh, grid, perforated or sintered or other construction, is carried by the piston in a position at least partly overlying the said recess, the fuel being injected into the said recess to contact and pass through the catalytic element, being ignited by its contact with the catalytic element.

摘要: A diesel engine using a low evaporativity fuel, and improves the fluidity of the air and fuel by injecting the fuel into a cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke forming a uniform gaseous mixture, whereby the generation of NO.sub.x is minimized. A swirl chamber is formed in a piston, and a primary chamber by a combustion chamber structure provided in a cavity of a cylinder head. A fuel injection nozzle injects a low evaporativity fuel, such as heavy oil, into the cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke, disperses the fuel into an air swirl in the cylinder, forms a uniform gaseous mixture of the fuel and air therein, and ignites and burns with the assistance of a glow plug the gaseous mixture entering the swirl chamber through communication ports at the end of the compression stroke. In another embodiment, the piston is provided with a plurality of radially arranged communication ports and a downwardly convergent fuel injection port, and a fuel injection nozzle injects a low evaporativity fuel into a cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke, disperses the fuel into an air swirl in the cylinder, forms a uniform gaseous mixture of the fuel and air in the cylinder, and ignites and burns the gaseous mixture in the swirl chamber by reliably supplying an ignition fuel thereto through the fuel injection port at the terminal end of the compression stroke.

摘要: The present invention is a catalytic ignition engine (10) having a catalytic hot plug (14) mounted therein for 24 alcohol fuel. The hot plug (28) comprises a base material (32) coated at least partially with a catalyst (34), preferably platinum, and mounted on the top of the piston (18). The hot plug (11) is heated by combustion and is mounted on a support member (30) designed to reduce heat transfer from the hot plug (11) to piston (18). Consequently, the hot plug (11) remains at a temperature sufficiently high to cause ignition of alcohol fuel when the fuel is sprayed into the cylinder bore (14).
