A photostable, filtering cosmetic composition for protecting human epidermis and hair against UV rays comprises, in a cosmetically acceptable carrier having at least one fatty phase 0.5 to 4% by weight of 4-(tert.-butyl) 4'-methoxy dibenzoylmethane and 0.1 to 20% by weight of a filtering polymer of the benzotriazole silicone type containing at least one unit of formula (1), where R' is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 hydrocarbon group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 halogenated hydrocarbon group or a trimethylsilyloxy group; a is 1 or 2; X=--A--Y where A is an aliphatic or aromatic bivalent hydrocarbon radical having at least 2 carbon atoms and optionally containing one or more oxygen atoms; Y is a 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole residue optionally containing one or more C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 alkenyl, halogen, alkoxy, carboxy, hydroxy or amino substituents, the weight ratio of the benzotriazole silicone to the 4-(tert.-butyl) 4'-methoxy dibenzoylmethane being between 1 and 10.

The invention relates to a photostable screening cosmetic composition for protecting human skin against UV rays, comprising, in a cosmetically acceptable substrate containing at least one fatty phase, 1 to 3% by weight of 4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4'-methoxydibenzoylmethane and at least 4.5% by weight of p-methylbenzylidenecamphor, the weight ratio of p-methylbenzylidenecamphor to 4-(1,1-dimethyl-ethyl)-4'-methoxydibenzoylmethane being higher than or equal to 3.It also relates to a process for protecting the skin against UV radiation and to a process for stabilizing 4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4'-methoxydibenzoylmethane against UV radiation.

A 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1-naphthalenol derivative of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 represent lower alkyl,R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 represent hydrogen or lower alkyl,R represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 alkyl substituted by one or more hydroxyl groups, C.sub.3 -C.sub.18 alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 acyl, benzyl, benzoyl, carboxyl and carboxylic salts of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or of an organic amine.The derivative is useful as an antioxidant in cosmetic compositions and in pharmaceutical compositions for the preventive treatment of cutaneous inflammations and allergies or certain forms of cancer.

New tert-butyl derivatives of benzylidenecamphor, process for preparing them, their use as antioxidant agents and cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions containing them.The invention relates to benzylidenecamphor derivatives of formula: ##STR1## where R is hydrogen or a tert-butyl residue, R.sub.1 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl or alkoxy residue, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 denote hydrogen or hydroxyl, at least one of the two being hydroxyl, to a process for preparing them and to their uses as antioxidants, broad-band sunscreens and medicinal products for the preventive treatment of skin allergies and inflammations as well as for the prevention of certain cancers.
