A two-part, heat stable, peroxide-free adhesive that can be mixed in equal parts with rapid cure for the bonding of plastics and metals has been discussed. Part A of the adhesive contains a polymeric material, an olefinically unsaturated monomer, an acid material, a compound containing a sulfonyl halide group, and a compound containing a transition metal; and Part B contains a polymeric material (preferably a phenoxy resin) and monomer of the same class and a Zn, Cu or Cd metal powder.

What is disclosed is a 2-part epoxy adhesive composition comprises an epoxy compound, an optional amine hardener, optional hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound, and from 20% to 60% of the total weight of adhesive combined of liquid terminal epoxy reactive groups and amidoamine, whereby the adhesive is applied as a mixture of first and second parts in a volume ratio of the first epoxy part: second cure part of 1:1.4 to 1:3.0. The adhesive is adapted to provide bonding of SMC with low or no read-through, initial and aged fiber tearing bonds and specified bond strength minimum at 400° F. (204° C.).

The adhesive composition includes olefinically unsaturated monomer; at least one phenoxy resin together with other reactive or non-reactive polymers; an acidic material; a compound containing sulfonyl halide group; and a compound containing a transition metal, in particular TiO.sub.2. The adhesive composition cures rapidly upon contact with a metal surface to form an adhesive bond between the surfaces. The adhesive composition is especially useful as an adhesive for galvanized steel parts subjected to elevated paint curing temperatures.

Stable aqueous emulsions useful as coatings, primers for promoting vinyl plastisol adhesion to metal, and adhesives for bonding vinyl to metal with high environmental resistance, are described, which comprise: (a) aqueous polyurethane latexes substantially free of emulsifier and containing about 0.02 to 1% of a salt type group from the class consisting of ##STR1## (b) an aqueous casein cocondensed phenolic-formaldehyde resin emulsion; and (c) an ionic fluorocarbon surfactant; in proportions of about 25 to 99% (a), about 1 to 50% (b) and about 1 to 10,000 parts per million (c), by weight of the total composition. Such emulsions are useful per se as coatings and primers and single package adhesives. Two-package adhesives having superior properties are provided, in which the foregoing emulsions as part A are cured by a crosslinker, part B, in a ratio A:B in the range from about 100 to 2.5A:1B. The crosslinking agents may be glyoxal, melamineformaldehyde resins, or any formaldehyde donor.

A non-yellowing urethane adhesive based on a polyurethane prepolymer which is prepared by reacting a specific combination of polyhydroxy compounds and an isocyanate compound. The polyhydroxy compounds include a polyalkylene ether diol, a polyalkylene ether triol, and a polyester polyol. The combination of these polyhydroxy compounds and an isocyanate compound results in an adhesive composition which has exceptionally good resistance to high temperature, humidity, and sustained UV radiation, particularly when applied to fabric-like materials.

Novel polyurethanes especially suited for applications requiring initial heat resistance in a non-alcohol, non-exotic solvent system such as methyl ethyl ketone and having peel strengths of at least 5 pounds per linear inch (pli) uncrosslinked at about 180.degree. to about 200.degree. F., optionally containing crosslinkers, and which are typically used in the automobile industry, are described. The new polyurethanes are substantially free of reactive isocyanate and hydroxyl groups and comprise the reaction product of(a) at least one polyisocyanate having at least two reactive isocyanate groups;(b) at least one polyester polyol having at least two hydroxyl groups;(c) at least one cycloaliphatic diol chain-extending agent; and(d) at least one monofunctional isocyanate-reactive chain-terminating compound;said polyisocyanate being present in an excess amount with respect to said polyester polyol and said cycloaliphatic diol;said monofunctional isocyanate-reactive compund being present in an amount sufficient to ensure reaction of excess isocyanate groups;said polyester polyol comprising the reaction product of(i) at least one saturated acyclic, cyclic or aromatic monomeric or polymeric polyol having at least two hydroxy groups;(ii) from 30 to 100 mole percent terephthalic acid; and(iii) from 70 to 0 mole percent of at least one saturated or unsaturated acyclic, cyclic or aromatic carboxylic acid, other than terephthalic acid, having at least two carboxyl groups;said polyurethane having a molecular weight of at least 20,000.

Improved adhesive compositions for laminating plastic and particularly vinyl films to metal are described which contain about 15 to 30 percent by weight of a phenolic resol having a methylol content of about 15 to 50 percent by weight, about 25 to about 40 percent by weight of certain nonfunctional polyurethanes having a molecular weight of at least 20,000 and preferably 60,000 to 300,000 and about 35 to 55 percent by weight of a vinyl solution polymer, all in an organic solvent. The nonfunctional polyurethanes are thermoplastic polyesterurethanes devoid of reactive isocyanate and hydroxyl groups and are derived from monomeric polyisocyanates and polyhydroxy compounds chain-extended with a low molecular weight diol, preferably a cycloaliphatic diol, to the desired molecular weight. When the polyhydroxy compound is a polycaprolactone polyol, it is essential that chain extension be effected with a cycloaliphatic diol, preferably dimethylolcyclohexane. When the polyhydroxy compound is a polyester polyol other than polycaprolactone polyols, it is essential that the polyester be derived from a polycarboxylic acid component comprising at least 30 mol percent, based on total mols of polycarboxylic acid employed in preparing the polyester, of at least one aromatic carboxylic acid. Polycaprolactone polyols can also be reacted with a polycarboxylic acid component comprising at least 30 mol percent aromatic polycarboxylic acid, in which case chain extension need not be effected with a cycloaliphatic diol. Especially preferred thermoplastic polyurethanes are obtained from the condensation of monomeric polyisocyanates and polyester polyols having an aromatic polycarboxylic content of at least 30 mol percent chain-extended with low molecular weight cycloaliphatic diol. The adhesives have activation temperatures as low as about 260.degree. F. (ca. 125.degree. C.) which makes them particularly suitable for laminating vinyl films of 6 mils thickness or less to metals without distortion or loss of any embossing or printed decoration on the film.
