Abstract:
Facilitating communications between an electronic payment device and an issuer host includes storing in the payment device a set of personalization parameters. A first set of status information indicative of available status information relating to the payment device is transformed into a second set of status information based on the set of personalization parameters, and/or a second set of actions is selected from a first set of actions indicative of available actions to be performed by the payment device based on the set of personalization parameters and an order received from the issuer for initiating at least one corresponding action in the payment device. The second set of status information includes a subset of the first set of status information; the second set of actions includes a subset of the first set of actions. The payment device transmits the second set of status information to the issuer and/or initiates the actions in the second set of actions corresponding to the order received from the issuer.
Abstract:
An electronic payment system for conducting transactions by presenting a contactless payment card to a card reader. The card reader processes transactions when only one card is present in its operating field. The card reader uses collision detection and avoidance algorithms to detect and report instances where multiple cards are present in the operating field. In response to a reported collision, the collision may be cleared by manual intervention, i.e., by physically removing excess cards from the reader's operating field.
Abstract:
A system and method for enhancing functional interoperability of contactless payment devices that are used for conducting electronic payment transactions between consumers and merchants. The contactless payment devices include RFID-embedded cards issued to consumers and proximity coupling devices such as RFID-enabled readers deployed by merchants. The system and method involve use of a reference card and a reference reader to establish acceptable specifications for issued cards and deployed readers, respectively. The reference card and reference reader are cross-calibrated to link the operational specifications for the cards and the readers. A suitable selection of overlapping specification ranges or tolerances for proper card and reader functions, the enhances the interoperability of the issued cards with a deployed reader, and also the interoperability of deployed readers with an issued card.

Abstract:
Reference equipment including a reference card and a reference reader is provided for testing electronic payment devices such as cards and card readers. The reference equipment is designed to simulate the external behavior of a variety of payment devices that are currently or expected to be deployed in electronic payment systems. Further, the reference equipment is configured to subject devices under test to extreme behaviors which are expected in field use or which are representative of a large class of payment devices. The external behaviors may relate to functional parameters, for example, power consumption, resonance frequency, Q-factor, modulation depth, noise, and timing. Exemplary reference devices are configured to exhibit representative external behavior, which is an empirically determined average behavior of the product devices in the field. Use of the reference equipment for product specification compliance testing will enhance the interoperability of product payment devices.
Abstract:
A handheld, paddle-shaped device with an elongate, flexible shaft that facilitates tucking bedcovers beneath a mattress. The elongate, flexible shaft facilitates reaching across a mattress to a mattress corner in order to tuck a sheet beneath the far corner of the mattress.
Abstract:
Initial presentation of a payment device to a payment terminal assembly, in connection with a putative transaction, is facilitated. The payment device includes a payment device memory storing a device-side payment application, with an on-device balance, and at least one payment device processor coupled to the payment device memory. The payment terminal assembly includes a terminal memory, storing a terminal-side payment application, and at least one terminal processor coupled to the terminal memory. A first command is sent from the payment terminal assembly to the payment device to compute a cryptogram to complete the putative transaction. It is detected that the cryptogram is not received as expected. In response, an identifier of the payment device and transaction recovery data associated with the putative transaction are stored in a storage area of the terminal memory. The payment terminal assembly obtains the identifier of the payment device, upon re-presentation of the payment device to the payment terminal assembly. Upon the re-presentation of the payment device to the payment terminal assembly, the payment terminal assembly compares the obtained identifier of the payment device to contents of the storage area. Conditioned at least upon the comparing yielding a match, a second command is sent from the payment terminal assembly to the payment device. The second command instructs the payment device to re-produce the cryptogram to complete the putative transaction.

Abstract:
A reference reader is provided for testing contactless electronic payment cards whose data transmissions are via weak load modulated RF carrier signals. The reference reader includes a reader antenna and a coupled common mode rejection circuit. The common mode rejection circuit is configured to demodulate carrier signals received at the reader antenna to retrieve payment card data signals having low modulation indices.
