Most color proofing constructions use photooligomers that are tacky, require an oxygen barrier to protect the colorant layer and have a short shelf life. The use of alkali soluble photopolymers in the colorant layer of a color proofing construction provides a more easily processable proofing construction, eliminates the need for an oxygen barrier and has improved shelf life of the photopolymer. The proofing construction has a flexible support base film and a colorant layer coated thereon, wherein the colorant layer comprises a colorant and an alkali soluble photopolymer.

Precisely shaped composites and methods for making these composites are disclosed. The method of this invention comprises the steps of:(a) providing a production tool comprising a plurality of cavities;(b) providing a dispensing means capable of introducing a binder precursor comprising a thermosetting resin into the cavities;(c) providing a means, for at least partially curing the binder precursor;(d) introducing said binder precursor into at least a portion of at least two of the cavities;(e) continuously moving the production tool through a curing zone to at least partially cure the binder precursor;(f) removing the solidified binder from the production tool; and(g) converting the solidified binderinto precisely shaped composites. Steps (f) and (g) can be conducted simultaneously. The composites can be bonded together to form a shaped mass, e.g., a wheel; alternatively, the composites can be bonded to a backing to form a coated abrasive article; or the composites can be bonded into a fibrous, nonwoven substrate to form a non-woven abrasive article.

A coated abrasive article comprising:(a) a backing;(b) at least one layer comprising a plurality of precisely shaped abrasive particles that comprise abrasive grits and a free-radically polymerized binder, wherein said precisely shaped particles have vertexes and(c) a bonding medium which serves to adhere said precisely shaped particles to said backing;wherein the precisely shaped particles are randomly disposed on the backing such that at least a portion of said particles are oriented with said vertexes pointing toward said backing.

Reactive polymeric dyes are provided comprising a chromophoric moiety derived from at least one free radically polymerizable dye and an azlactone moiety derived from 2-alkenylazlactone such that the free radically polymerizable dye is incorporated into the backbone of the polymer. Alternatively, 2-alkenylazlactone is polymerized and then derivatized with a nucleophilic dye or dyes, such that the chromophoric portion of the dye is pendent to the polymer backbone. Both types of reactive polymeric dyes may also contain additional polymerized monomeric units. The reactive polymeric dyes of the present invention can be used in a photoresist system and in particular in a color proofing construction.

A method for the application of a thermal spray coating to the cylinder wall portions of an aluminum engine block casting is disclosed in which the casting is inverted and water is caused to flow through the cooling passages of the engine block in a series flow from one end of a bank of cylinders to the other while the block is supported on a fixture that seals the cooling passage outlets in the head of the block. The fixture further permits the spray of a metallized coating onto the cylinder walls without adherence of the spray to the fixture or to other portions of the block.

Precisely shaped composites and methods for making these composites are disclosed. The method of this invention comprises the steps of: (a) providing a production tool having a plurality of cavities; (b) providing a dispensing means capable of introducing a binder precursor comprising a thermosetting resin into the cavities; (c) providing a means, within a curing zone, for at least partially curing the binder precursor; (d) introducing the binder precursor into at least a portion of at least two of the cavities; (e) continuously moving the production tool through the curing zone to at least partially cure the binder precursor to provide a solidified, handleable binder; (f) removing the binder from said at least one cavity; and (g) converting the binder into precisely shaped composites. Steps (f) and (g) can be conducted simultaneously. The composites are bonded to a backing to form a coated abrasive article.

This invention provides a method of making an abrasive article. The method of this invention comprises the steps of:a. providing a backing having a front surface;b. providing a radiation energy transmissive production tool having a contacting surface;c. applying a mixture comprising a plurality of abrasive particles and a binder precursor onto the contacting surface of the production tool;d. causing the mixture on the contacting surface of the production tool to come into contact with the front surface of the backing such that the mixture wets the front surface of the backing;e. transmitting radiation energy through the production tool to at least partially cure the binder precursor to form a shaped, handleable structure; andf. separating the shaped, handleable structure from the production tool. The shaped, handleable structure can be fully cured to form a coated abrasive article.
