A poly(arylene ether)/polystyrene blend may be prepared by melt kneading a carboxylic acid compound, a poly(arylene ether), and a polystyrene to form an intimate blend, and steam stripping the intimate blend, where melt kneading is conducted with a specific energy consumption of about 0.1 to about 0.3 kilowatt-hour per kilogram of blend. The method allows the formation of an intimate resin blend while minimizing the styrene monomer content of the final blend.

Polycarbonates are provided exhibiting anisotropic properties in the melt. Transesterification of diphenyl carbonate is effected in the melt with a mixture of 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl and 4,4'-dihydroxyphenylether. The polymer readily forms high strength fibers from the melt.

An amorphous polyamide having a high heat distortion temperature is produced by reacting toluenediamine with isophthalic acid, and optionally terephthalic acid, in the presence of either an aliphatic diacid, an aliphatic diamine or a mixture thereof. The polyamide provides the combined properties of a high heat distortion temperature, low shrinkage upon cooling, high levels of chemical resistance, is processable at temperatures below its degradation temperature, and has a high flexural modulus. With these combined properties the polyamide is particularly suitable for fiber reinforced automotive applications requiring exposure to excessive heat in conventional automotive paint bake ovens.

The compositions may further comprise at least one additive from the group consisting of impact modifiers, non-elastomeric polymers of an alkenyl aromatic compound and an additive package. The flow of such compositions can be further improved with the addition of an optional flow promoting terpene phenol material without significant loss of the physical properties.
