Porous aluminum titanate is composed of porous particles having a form in which a plurality of particles of amoeba-like shape having a plurality of projections extending in random directions are fused together. For example, its pore volume within the pore diameter range of 0.0036 to 10 μm in a pore size distribution as measured by a mercury porosimeter is 0.05 ml/g or more.
