An apparatus for measuring the mass of a flowing medium and a method for producing the apparatus are proposed in which a plate-like carrier on which at least one resistance coating is applied. Continuous fastening openings are provided in the carrier and the resistance coating such that they extend parallel to one another and at the same distance from one edge of the carrier. Rigid electrical connections are inserted through the fastening openings and are soldered provisionally with the resistance coating. A source of current is applied to each of the electrical connections for heating the connections to such an extent that the solder between the electrical connections and the resistance coating melts, causing the carrier located in a steady laminar flow to rotate into a streamlined position. The heating current is then interrupted, and the solder, as it sets, fixes the carrier in this streamlined position at the electrical connections.

On the other end, the ends of the electrical conductor connections rest with support segments each on one end face of the carrier and with fastening segments partially encompassing and gripping the carrier. The fastening segments are soldered or welded to a connecting layer or directly to the temperature-dependent resistor. As a result, the soldered or welded connection is held in a flexion-free and thrust-free manner on the fastening segments.

An apparatus for measuring the mass of a flowing medium, in particular, for measuring the aspirated air mass in internal combustion engines. The apparatus includes a flow conduit for the medium, embodied as an air intake tube and having a restricted section, into which a bypass line toward the restricted section discharges at a mouth. In the bypass line there is a temperature-dependent resistor, which ascertains the mass of air flowing via the bypass line, this mass being at a predetermined proportion to that flowing through the flow conduit of the medium, and this resistor via an electronic control unit triggers a fuel-injection valve in the flow conduit of the medium. The course of the flow cross section in the restricted section is determined by way of example by a shaped body surrounding the fuel injection valve. The mouth of the bypass line is located at the narrowest flow cross section of the restricted section, while downstream of the narrowest cross section and adjacent thereto, the flow cross section is enlarged by an amount which corresponds to the bypass line cross section at the mouth. As a result, undesirable falsification of the measurement signal at the temperature-dependent resistor which might be caused by pulsations in the air flow is prevented.

A air flow rate meter apparatus includes an air bypass line, which branches off from a filter housing on the air intake fitting of an internal combustion engine and discharges at a restriction of the air intake tube upstream of a throttle valve. An injection valve is disposed in the restricted section, ejecting fuel in the direction toward a throttle valve. The air bypass line extends vertically and has a first U-shaped section, the connecting portion of which is located at a lower level than its legs. A temperature-dependent resistor in the form of a hot wire or hot strip is disposed in the downstream leg of the first U-shaped section, so that during a burnoff procedure of the temperature-dependent resistor a flow is effected in the direction toward the mouth of the air bypass line, thus preventing the aspiration of a fuel-air mixture into the air bypass line and thus avoiding the danger of ignition with the possible destruction of the temperature-dependent resistor.

A method is proposed for measuring the throughput of a medium, in particular the air aspirated by an internal combustion engine, in a flow cross section and for correcting the flowthrough measurement value (U.sub.s) furnished by a air flow measuring device in the event of a pulsating flow. To this end, the air flow measurement value (U.sub.s) is modified, in a selected range of the characteristic curve of the air flow measuring device, in such a manner that the error in the air flow measurement value (U.sub.s) resulting from the pulsation of the medium is reduced or compensated for. The range of the characteristic curve selected for modification of the air flow measurement value (U.sub.s) preferably is located below a minimum air flow measurement value (U.sub.sm) characterizing a minimum air flow value (Q.sub.m). In like manner, in order to modify the air flow measurement value (U.sub.s) below the minimum air flow measurement value (U.sub.sm) characterizing the minimum air flow value (Q.sub.m), a corrective air flow measurement value (U.sub.sk) can be established, which is smaller than the air flow value (U.sub.so) at an air flow value of zero.

A method is proposed for measuring the flow rate of the pulsating air mass aspirated by an internal combustion engine when there is a backflow. To this end, an integration process in one direction is initiated at a zero passage of the flow rate measurement value (U.sub.S) of the air flow rate measuring device at a given time, which indicates the beginning of the backflow; this integration process is continued until a subsequent zero passage occurs. Directly thereafter, an integration process in the opposite direction is initiated, which is terminated at a time when the latter integration value returns to zero. During the first integration process the flow rate measurement value (U.sub.S) is set to the value of zero and is not deregulated until the termination of the second integration process, so that it then jumps to a value which is subtracted from the flow rate measurement value, and the result is a flow rate measurement value from which the backflow has been excluded.
