摘要： A method of producing a tire having an outside-in ply construction is provided. The method includes the steps of: providing a tire building drum; laying an inner liner on said drum, applying a first layer of ply on the right hand side of the drum so that a first end of the first ply layer is located over a first bead area while the second end of the first ply layer extends laterally outwards therefrom, applying a first bead over the first bead area and ply end; applying a second layer of ply on the left hand side of the drum so that one end of the second ply layer is located over a second bead area, while the second end extends laterally outwards therefrom; applying a second bead over the second toeguard and end of second ply layer; folding the second end of the first layer of ply over the first bead until the second end of the first layer of ply contacts the second bead; folding the second layer of ply over the second bead and apex so that the outer end of the second layer of ply is located over the first bead; and shaping the carcass into a toroid. A second method of building a tire carcass comprising the steps outlined above, with an additional third layer of ply being added that has lateral ends extending from said first bead to said second bead. The tire carcass may additionally comprise one or more pairs of sidewall inserts.

摘要： This invention pertains to a method and for cutting an intermediate article of manufacture, the intermediate article of manufacture being a cord reinforced elastomeric laminate. The laminate when cut to length, becomes a carcass for a pneumatic tire. The laminate is cut by a cutting element at angles .theta. greater than 60.degree. relative to a normal plane (NP) perpendicular to a cord reinforced ply of the laminate and parallel to the cords to thereby create large substantially flat planar splice surfaces without significant deformation or precuring of the unvulcanized elastomeric materials. To facilitate this cut, the relative position of the cutting element and the ply is changed to an angle .beta., .beta. being less than .theta.. The ply is cut a short distance, at the angle .beta., to position the cutting element between two parallel cords. Then the cutting element is reoriented to the angle .theta. to complete the cut.

摘要： An apparatus for cutting segments from a long sheet of multilayered elastomeric material. An initial opening is formed in the sheet without severing reinforcing cords within the elastomeric sheet by a penetrator/separator. Two ultrasonic knives are inserted on either side of the penetrator/separator and positioned to cut the sheet at a small skive angle &agr; with respect to the plane of the sheet being cut. Then the knives are moved to opposite edges of the sheet of elastomeric material.

摘要： A laminate composite structure is provided in continuous lengths or rolls for making an unvulcanized carcass for a radial ply pneumatic tire as an intermediate article of manufacture. The laminate has a ply and a plurality of elastomeric components hot formed and attached directly to the ply. Each component has a predetermined cross-sectional profile. The elastomeric components including, but not limited to, a liner, a sidewall, and a chafer. Additional other elastomeric components for the carcass can be formed and attached to the laminate structure. The laminate forms an intermediate article of manufacture that at a later stage of tire building can be cut to length and spliced along common ends to form a cylindrical carcass structure.
