摘要: Processes for controlling pollution by: (a) devolatizing vapor phase chemical pollutants (VP's) found in effluents and other bodies and streams of gases and liquids, and (b) stabilizing substrates from which the VP's are released. The offending VP's are converted to less offensive or inoffensive materials by interaction with an appropriately formulated treating agent (VTA/C) containing a primary halogen and at least one additional ingredient selected from the following classes of constituents (optional if bromine is the primary halogen and otherwise required): oligodynamically active metals, cohalogens, adjuncts, and facilitators. The major constituent(s) may be supplied as such, or a source of the constituent may be provided. Actinic radiation can be employed to promote reactions between the VP and the VTA/C, which is often formulated as an aqueous scrubbing medium. The VTA/C may, however, be employed in other ways--for example: (a) by gaseous infusion into a reaction zone; (b) by dusting or coating the treating agent onto, or otherwise directly adding it to, a substrate prone to evolve VP's to control the emission of VP's from the substrate; or (c) by impregnating it into an activated carbon carrier.

摘要: A process and apparatus is disclosed for treating fibrous material under pressure which includes at least two pressure relief devices. The pressure relief devices are arranged so that only one at a time is exposed to pressure during the treatment process. When the exposed pressure relief device is ruptured in response to an abnormal increase in pressure, the ruptured device may be isolated and the second pressure relief device exposed to the operating pressure so that the treatment apparatus may be operated on a substantially continuous basis.

摘要: Meat products which, before and after preparation, have the aroma, appearance, and taste of meat products of a comparable character but contain substantially less cholesterol and/or saturated fats and typically retain their juiciness and taste upon standing after being cooked for a longer time than conventional meat products do. The reduced cholesterol/saturated fat content is realized by in part substituting for natural adipose an artificial adipose based on an emulsion of: (a) blood plasma, preferably from the same specie of animal as the meat from which the product is made, and (b) cholesterol-free or low cholesterol fats and oils which may also be free of saturation or have a low degree of saturation. Various agents can be employed to convert the blood plasma/lipid emulsion to a gelatinous form in which it closely resembles a natural adipose; and the adipose can be formulated so that it will become colorless as the product is prepared by cooking like natural adipose does. The adipose can also be used for other purposes. The artificial adiposes contain a protein/saccharide system which can also be used to provide a host of other new and valuable products including skins and membranes, dewatering agents, coagulants, and stabilizers for lipid/aqueous carrier systems with high concentrations of lipids.

摘要: Solid lipid pellets containing 65% to 95%, or higher, lipid concentration suitable for use in or as animal food supplements and/or feed rations wherein: a mixture containing at least water and an edible algin-like coagulant is formed in a mixing chamber (11,12); a liquified lipid is added to form a gel-like algin/water/lipid emulsion; and, the emulsion is deposited in discrete quantities (30) into a metal ion bath (29) causing the emulsion to "set" in a lipid pellet integral and solid throughout its entire structure. The lipid pellets may be packaged for delivery to points of consumption and/or admixed with other feed materials to form nutritive animal feed rations. Small amounts of ammonia and/or bentonite may be added to the aqueous mixture to increase the lipid absorptive capacity thereof. One exemplary system (10) includes: a predistributor chamber (18); distributor(s) (24,25); a positive displacement pump (22); a tank (28) containing a setting bath (29) and defining forming and firming chambers (31,32); a rotary perforate cylinder (36) having a helical flight (38) for removing firmed pellets (30); and, a setting bath recirculator (35). Modified distributors (40) include specially shaped blades (46,46') having pie-shaped blade segments (46a-46d, 46a'-46d') and complementally shaped intra-blade segment openings for forming pellets of uniform size and shape.

摘要: An aqueous liquid containing unsaturated vegetable, marine or land animal oil or liquid fat, preferably drying or semidrying oil, is used as a scrubbing liquid to remove pollutant from an air stream. Specifically, styrene constituting an air pollutant is sorbed from the air and polymerized to polystyrene by ultraviolet light radiation to facilitate its separation from the scrubbing liquid.

摘要: An effluent treatment apparatus adapted for conditioning an effluent stream within a treatment zone is comprised of an injection system which includes at least one injection nozzle having a flexible discharge tube with an effective length at least equal to the characteristic wavelength for flexural resonant vibration thereof when pressurized fluid issues therefrom. The injection nozzle(s) preferably include(s) a length of elastomeric tubing as the discharge conduit, capable of providing a high flow rate of a conditioning agent to the treatment apparatus while delivering same in a relatively finely divided state. The conditioning agents may be delivered to a treatment zone within the apparatus in a generally concurrent, generally countercurrent, or generally transverse direction with respect to the flow of effluent to be conditioned. A recirculating system for the conditioning agent may be employed.

摘要: A nozzle for expelling a fluid stream and dispersing and/or mixing same with(in) an ambient fluid is comprised of a resiliently flexible tube having an effective length at least equal to one harmonic wavelength of a coupled fluid stream for flexural resonant vibration of the tube as the stream is conducted therethrough, wherein the tube has a transverse cross-sectional profile and a longitudinal cross-sectional profile, at least one of which possesses a motion-affecting geometric gradient. The tube of the nozzle may include vanes disposed for creating turbulence within the ambient fluid. The nozzle is preferably formed from an elastomeric material and includes an enlarged, plastically deformable shoulder region at its proximal end for radial distention upon passage of any particulate material within the fluid stream having a dimensional aspect in excess of the bore dimension of the tube.

摘要: Solidifiable petroleum wax is placed in liquid form to solidify on the surface of a pond, such as a degradant lagoon for deterring emanation of malodorous gases or collecting malodorous or energy latent gases, or a reservoir to deter evaporation. The entire cover can be of liquid solidified in situ on the surface of the pond or a sheet cover can be formed by placing solidifiable buoyant material in liquid form between premolded solid cover sections or cakes to which the liquid can bond in solidifying to join adjacent premolded sections. The premolded cakes and/or the buoyant material solidified in situ can include reinforcement, such as net, which preferably also is buoyant. A suitable solidifiable buoyant material is petroleum wax which can include woody material such as sawdust or shavings, serving as an adsorbent, filler and/or vehicle for treating materials, and/or other additives such as oxidizer material, deodorant material, catalysts, enzymes and/or nutrients for anaerobic bacteria.
