The present invention is directed to a surgical instrument assembly that includes an operative element and an insertion instrument removably engageable to the operative element. The insertion instrument is positionable in a patient with the operative element engaged thereto to position the operative element at an operative site in the patient. A transfer instrument is removably engageable to the operative element when the operative instrument is located at the operative site. The insertion instrument can then be removed. Methods for using the surgical instrument assembly are also disclosed.

Sleeve assemblies can be provided with a reduced width portion adjacent the distal end to limit the amount of retraction of the surrounding vascular and neural structures required for the procedure. A sleeve assembly can be provided with a guide sleeve removably engaged to a guide sleeve housing. The guide sleeve can be removed during surgery to improve the surgeon's viewing of the operative site while the guide sleeve housing maintains disc space distraction. In one embodiment, the handle is autoclaveable and reusable, and includes connections between an electrical cable (e.g. for providing electrical energy and/or transmitting electrical signals) and an operating end of the tool. An insert member having arms for stripping wire or cable electrically connects the cable and the operating end of the tool, and a set screw may be provided to hold the cable in place. A clip member may also be provided to hold the handle to the rest of the tool. Method for using and assembling handle embodiments are also described.

The instruments include a guide sleeve defining a channel having overlapping cylindrical working channel portions and lateral non-distracting extensions extending from reduced thickness wall portions. The guide sleeve has an overall reduced width configuration. A pair of distractors are provided. A first distractor includes a shaft and distal tip, and the second distractor includes a shaft and distal tip. The first and second distractors can be used with the guide sleeve. Methods using the disclosed instruments are also provided.

A universal quench press is used for the precision quenching of gears, bearing rings, saw blades, slitting knives, cylindrical parts, flat parts, dished parts, and other articles. A set of quenching dies reduce or eliminate the distortions in size, roundness, taper, and flatness encountered in manufacturing processes prior to the press quenching process and/or operation. The press has a plurality of posts or tie-rods configured to distribute the forces of the applied loads uniformly. Provisions are made for a plurality of generally concentric rams with all of the rams powered by hydraulic or pnuematic cylinders or other force exerting device or devices to provide a uniform and evenly distributed force. An automatic quench media splash guard seals the quenching chamber during operation and requires absolutely no set-up or operating adjustments or changes. Two or more automatic doors provide complete access to the die area during set-up and/or allow two or more points for loading and/or unloading of workpieces and/or tooling. For ultimate accuracy, the lower die plate is stationary and provides a means of guiding the center ram, thus assuring concentricity. Graduated shims are added or removed from the center ram stop to decrease or increase the final part bore diameter as required.
