    摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for processing and densifying recyclable materials. In one embodiment, a recyclable container densification device is provided for reliably rendering a bar code of a recyclable container unreadable. In another embodiment, the densification device is reconfigurable to be able to produce different types of recovered material from recyclable containers. In another embodiment, a chute is provided that promotes the entry of recyclable materials into a densification device by dropping the materials directly thereon. An additional embodiment includes a recycling system manufactured from densification modules that can be assembled to in different numbers and mixes to meet the needs of different customers.

    摘要: A method of carrying out an amplification reaction, said method comprising supplying to a well in a disposable unit (a) a sample which contains or is suspected of containing a target nucleic acid sequence (b) primers, nucleotides and enzymes required to effect said amplification reaction and (c) a buffer system, and subjecting the unit to thermal cycling conditions such that any target nucleic acid present within the sample is amplified; wherein the disposable unit comprises a thermally conducting layer and a facing layer having one or more reagent wells of up to 1000 microns in depth defined therebetween; and the reaction mixture comprises at least one of the following: A) a buffer system wherein the pH is above 8.3; B) a detergent; and/or C) a blocking agent. Apparatus for effecting the method as well as disposable units for use in the method are described. The method is particularly suitable for rapid PCR reactions.

    摘要: A fiber optic sensor comprises two independent fibers having Bragg gratings which are coupled to commutating broadband optical sources through splitters and wavelength discriminators. The ratio of detected optical energy in each of two detectors examining the wave intensity returned to a wavelength discriminator coupled with the characteristic of the wavelength discriminator determines the wavelength returned by the grating. In another embodiment, tunable filters are utilized to detect minimum returned wave energy to extract a sensor wavelength. Reference to the original grating wavelength indicates the application of either temperature or strain to the grating. In another embodiment, a plurality of Bragg grating sensor elements is coupled to sources and controllers wherein a dimensional change in a fiber having a Bragg grating is detected using a measurement system comprising broad-band sources, optical power splitters, a high-sensitivity wavelength discriminator, optical detectors, and a controller.

    摘要: A new type of fiber filter is useable in optical communication systems. In particular, the fiber filter may be used to flatten the gain of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Such gain flattening is important for long-haul, dense (wavelength dependent multiplexed) WDM communication systems. The filter includes a periodic mechanical structure pressed against the side of a single-mode fiber to induce a wavelength-dependent loss in a signal propagating in the fiber core by coupling the signal to fiber cladding modes. The mechanical structure is a periodic comb of small ridges. Each ridge induces a local index change in the fiber via the photoelastic effect. For coupling to the right cladding modes, the period of the grating (and the comb) is in the range of few hundreds of microns. Thus, the grating is easy to fabricate with standard machining equipment.

    摘要: The present invention significantly improves the signal to noise ratio (SNR) in a passive optical array by adding erbium-doped optical amplifiers between the sensor couplings to offset the coupler splitting losses. Optical amplifiers are inserted between the sensor couplings along the signal path, and the gain of the amplifiers is designed to offset losses due to the previous coupling. The overall SNR can be maintained without significant degradation even for large numbers of sensors. In a first aspect of the present invention, the amplifiers are located along the distribution and return buses directly after the couplers, except possibly for the last sensor. In a second aspect of the present invention, the amplifiers are located directly before the couplers. The optical amplifiers preferably are made of short lengths of erbium-doped fiber spliced into the distribution and return buses. Improvements can be made to the SNR when the distribution bus coupling ratios are set at optimal values. The value of the optimal coupling ratio depends upon the amplifier configuration, the excess loss and other configuration parameters. In alternative embodiments, sensors are grouped into parallel configurations along the distribution and return buses to increase the number of sensors without a corresponding increase in the number of amplifiers and with an improvement in system performance to a certain point.
