A control unit has an operator upshift demand input terminal and an operator downshift demand input terminal. The control unit has a circuit that generates a two-level up signal and a circuit that generates a two-level down signal. It has an “ON” level indicative of presence of an operator upshift demand on the operator upshift demand input terminal. The down signal has an “OFF” level indicative of absence of an operator downshift demand on the operator downshift demand terminal. It has an “ON” level indicative of presence of an operator downshift demand on the operator downshift demand input terminal. The control unit has software, which generates an upshift demand upon a rise in level of the up signal to “ON” level if the down signal is at “OFF” level. This software enables the control unit to generate a downshift demand upon a rise in level of the down signal to “ON” level if the up signal is at “OFF” level.

A torque converter automatic transmission of a motor vehicle is equipped with an overheat prevention system of the torque converter. The system comprises a first unit which detects the temperature of a hydraulic fluid in an oil pan of the transmission; a second unit which detects whether the engine is under high load condition or low load condition; a third unit which derives an overheat judging reference temperature in accordance with the detection of the second unit, the overheat judging reference temperature indicating a first reference temperature upon detection of the high load condition of the engine by the second unit and indicating a second reference temperature upon detection of the low load condition of the engine by the second unit, the first reference temperature being lower than the second reference temperature; and a fourth unit which carries out a given operation to lower the temperature of the torque converter when the temperature of the hydraulic fluid in the oil pan exceeds the overheat judging reference temperature.

A shift mode selector for an automatic transmission of a vehicle drive train including an engine, includes a first shift point map for an automatic shift in an automatic shift mode and a second shift point map in a manual shift mode. An input device produces an operator mode change demand from the manual shift mode to the automatic shift mode. A controller determines whether or not a potential downshift demand is available upon effecting a mode change demanded by said operator mode change demand. The controller prohibits the mode change when said potential downshift demand is available, and produces a gear ratio control signal in accordance with the second shift point map unless a predetermined condition is met. The gear ratio control signal is applied to a gear ratio actuator for establishing various gear ratios in the automatic transmission.

A torque converter lock-up clutch controlling system for a vehicle drive train inputs a vehicle speed signal and an engine load signal. The vehicle drive train includes an automatic transmission operable in a manual ("M") ratio change mode when an operator selects a "M" range position. The system enables the automatic transmission to behave like a manual transmission upon selection of the "M" range position. A memory includes a "M" range lock-up shift point map for storing data which relates the lock-up application and release to the vehicle speed and engine load signals. The "M" range lock-up shift point map includes lock-up application values, which correspond to the magnitudes of the vehicle speed signal at which lock-up clutch applications are to occur. The magnitudes of the vehicle speed signal at which lock-up clutch applications are to occur are determined in a manner as a function of the magnitudes of the engine load signal. The "M" range lock-up shift point map includes a lock-up release value which corresponds to the magnitude of the vehicle speed signal at which lock-up clutch releases are to occur regardless of the magnitudes of the engine load signal. A controller receiving the vehicle speed and engine load signals, retrieves data from the "M" range lock-up shift point map and processes the retrieved data to produce a lock-up signal. A lock-up actuator controls the toque converter lock-up clutch in response to the lock-up signal.
