In one illustrative example, the magnetic head includes a write head element and a heating element which is a resistive infared radiator. The heating element is coupled to at least one via pad which is exposed on an outer surface of the magnetic head. An alloy of tetragonal polycrystalline structure acts as a thin film magnetic medium. The medium can be for recording or sensing magnetic transitions representative of data and is of a thickness less than about 200 .ANG., and has a coercivity in excess of about 2000 Oe. The film is in the L1o phase which is suitable for longitudinal recording and can be constituted by an alloy selected from cobalt or iron together with platinum or palladium. The film is formed by sputtering from a target and thereafter annealing the thin film and at a temperature in excess of about 500.degree. C.

A magnetic recording system is provided having a write head employing a combination of magnetic write field gradient and thermal gradient to write data on a ‘thermal spring’ magnetic recording media. The write head comprises a magnetic element using a write current to induce a magnetic write field at the magnetic media and a thermal element using a very small aperture laser to heat a portion of the media. A resistor, fabricating method, and thermal sensor material for resistors that incorporate high Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) values and low resistivity for better sensitivity in infrared imaging applications are disclosed. Amorphous oxide thin films, preferably oxides of vanadium (VOx), were deposited on thermally grown silicon dioxide by direct current (DC) magnetron co-sputtering of noble metals (gold and platinum) in a controlled argon/oxygen atmosphere. The ideal conditions for preparing an amorphous vanadium oxide/noble metal thin film are identified. TCR and resistivity results showed that the additions of gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) into VOx reduced the resistivity. However, only gold (Au) was found to improve TCR value. Reducing the amount of oxygen in the thin film, further improved the ratio between TCR and resistivity. Infrared detection and imaging devices can be greatly improved with a “drop-in” amorphous vanadium oxide/noble metal thin film of the present invention.

A heterogeneous thin film structure including a discontinuous layer of ferromagnetic material deposited on an insulating substrate and overcoated with a layer of nonmagnetic electrically conductive material exhibits giant magnetoresistance in saturation fields on the order of 350 Oersteds. A layer of ferromagnetic material is deposited on a heated insulating substrate by high vacuum evaporation techniques to form a layer of isolated ferromagnetic particles and overcoated with a nonmagnetic conductive material to form a plurality of ferromagnetic particles embedded in a nonmagnetic conductive matrix. As the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic materials are deposited separately, it is not required that the two materials be immiscible and subsequent annealing is not required to induce phase separation.
