Abstract:
A device for estimating the cross sectional shape of a workpiece and measuring its dimensions by detecting the width of the workpiece, the contact angle or the contact position when the saw blade contacts the workpiece, and the presence or absence of a workpiece vertical side surface. In addition, if the cross sectional shape and dimensions of the workpiece are already known, the positional relationship of the band saw blade and the workpiece can be calculated by detecting the position of the band saw blade. The positional relationship of the workpiece and the saw blade guides can be calculated so that the saw blade guides are controlled to maintain a position in which they do not obstruct the workpiece.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling the feeding of a bandsaw blade in a horizontal bandsaw machine so that the bandsaw blade is fed at a uniform optimum cutting rate. A control system is provided for controlling the feeding speed and the driven speed of the bandsaw blade in such a manner that the ratio of the feeding speed to the driven speed is kept constant during a cutting operation.
Abstract:
A method and device for measuring the shape and dimensions of a workpiece which is to be cut by a sawing machine. The method includes detecting the width of the workpiece, detecting the contact angle or contact position when the saw blade contacts the workpiece, detecting the presence or absence of a workpiece vertical side surface, judging whether the cross-sectional shape of the workpiece is round or square from data including the width of the workpiece, the contact angle or contact position, and the presence or absence of a workpiece vertical side, and displaying and calculating the dimensions of the workpiece. The device includes a width detector for the detecting the width of the workpiece, a contact angle detector for detecting the contact angle or contact position when the saw blade contacts the workpiece, and a vertical surface detector for detecting the presence or absence of a workpiece vertical side surface. Also included is calculation apparatus for judging whether the cross sectional shape of a workpiece is round or square from the data including the width of the workpiece, the contact angle or contact position, and the presence or absence of a vertical side surface, as well as apparatus for displaying the shape and dimensions of a workpiece.
Abstract:
The invention is a cutting machine and its method of operation. The machine contains a vise, a feed mechanism for positioning a workpiece toward the cutting position, a mechanism for detecting the front end of the workpiece, a mechanism for detecting the transfer distance of the front end of the workpiece, a mechanism acting in conjunction with the last two referenced mechanisms to reduce the feed speed of the workpiece, a mechanism to control the feed velocity of the workpiece, a mechanism to contact the first end of the workpiece, and a mechanism to halt the speed of the workpiece.

A method for controlling the feeding of a band saw blade in a horizontal band saw machine so that the band saw blade is fed at a uniform optimum cutting rate. A control system is provided for controlling the feeding speed and the driving speed of the band saw blade in such a manner that the ratio of the feeding speed to the driving speed is kept constant during a cutting operation and the ratio of cutting resistance to driving speed is maintained constant to provide a constant cutting power.
Abstract:
A cutting machine for subdividing material lengths comprises a roller table establishing a transport path along which the material is directed to a cutting zone. A cutting head assembly has a cutting blade for cutting material located at the cutting zone. A front vise assembly is fixed adjacent to the cutting zone with first and second jaws arranged in opposed mutually spaced relationship on opposite sides of the transport path. A first jaw operating mechanism is provided for adjusting the spacing of the first and second jaws between an open position permitting movement therebetween of the material and a closed position clamping the material therebetween. A rear vise assembly is mounted on a carriage underlying the roller table. The carriage is movable in opposite directions parallel to the transport path. The rear vise assembly has third and fourth jaws also arranged in opposed mutually spaced relationship on opposite sides of the transport path. A second jaw operating mechanism is carried on the carriage and operates to adjust the spacing of the third and fourth jaws between an open position permitting movement of the carriage relative to the material and a closed position clamping the material therebetween, thereby establishing a fixed relationship between the material and the carriage. A carriage operating mechanism moves the carriage in opposite direction along the transport path.
