Abstract:
Disclosed are systems and methods correction of spinal deformity that overcome current limitations by utilizing a dynamic, multi-segment torso orthosis that allows motion during wear. The disclosed embodiments utilize a series of elastically coupled segments that conform to the circumference of the torso of a patient. Adjustable elastic coupling mechanisms are utilized to create and alter forces and moments that are applied to the torso through the segments. These elastic coupling mechanisms also allows each circumferential segment to move relative to the other segments giving the brace dynamic capability.
Abstract:
Herein a Bacillus exosporium antigen delivery (BEAD) system that provides a means to introduce recombinant proteins or small molecules into the exosporium of members of the B. cereus family of bacteria, i.e. B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis, is disclosed. The system results in the surface display of recombinant proteins or small molecules such that they can stimulate an immune response. In addition, methods of making and using the system are described.
Abstract:
Disclosed is, among other things, a bookmark including a band which may wrap around a book and may therefore be prevented from falling out as the book is opened. A marker may be attached to the band via a thread or other means, and may be used to mark a page of interest in the book.
Abstract:
An environmental seal between two compartments, such as in a process transmitter, linked by a passageway contains an electrical cable. The seal includes a stop, a cable gland body, a compression bushing, a cable gland nut, and a first elastomeric seal. The stop projects from an interior surface of the passageway. The cable gland body is in contact with the stop and encircles a portion of the electrical cable. The compression bushing is within the cable gland body and encircles the portion of the electrical cable. The cable gland nut compresses the compression bushing and seals the compression bushing against the electrical cable and against an interior surface of the cable gland body. The first elastomeric seal seals between an exterior surface of the cable gland body and the interior surface of the passageway.
Abstract:
A computer-implemented method for determining changes in parameters of a hip joint due to modification of the hip joint comprises establishing a first position of a pre-operative center of rotation of the joint in a first coordinate space. The method further comprises estimating a second position of the pre-operative center of rotation of the joint in the first coordinate space, when the estimated pre-operative center of rotation is maintained in a constant position in a second coordinate space. A change in a parameter associated with the joint is determined based on the first and second positions of the pre-operative center of rotation of the joint.
Abstract:
An automated system for testing a variety of transmissions and drive line gearbox components, and more particularly helicopter transmissions, for reliability, life expectancy, efficiency, and the like on a semi-automated basis. The system powers a unit under test with a pair of AC, variable speed drive motors connected to the transmission through relatively low speed gearboxes which in turn drive the input(s) of the test unit through geared cartridge spindles (GCSs) employing planetary gearset inputs driving a higher speed machine tool type spindle with an output chuck system which can automatically couple to adapters preloaded on the unit under test. Similar GCSs couple the outputs of the test unit to AC motors which act as generators to power the driving motors and thereby reduce the required electric power input to the losses in the system. A unit to be tested is loaded onto a positioning fixture supported on a rollable test pallet, equipped with sensors and GCS adapters, and moved into the test module where it is clamped into position and connected to the GCSs to provide input and output connections. The main rotor shaft is connected to the regenerative motor generators through a dual, 90 degree combiner gear box that includes a hydraulic thrust loading actuator for imposing axial forces against the mast. The gearboxes between the motors and the unit under test will accommodate several different types of unit under test and can be replaced to accommodate still other types.
Abstract:
Reduced bone fracture fixation devices and methods for using the same are provided. Aspects of the reduced bone fracture fixation devices include a body dimensioned to be positioned in a reduced bone fracture, wherein the body includes at least one tension element configured to exert a force on bone of the reduced bone fracture sufficient to maintain reduction of the reduced bone fracture. Aspects of the invention further include kits and methods of using and manufacturing the bone fracture fixation devices. The devices, kits and methods of the invention find use in a variety of applications, such as in applications in which it is desired to repair a reduced bone fracture.
