Abstract: The present invention is an improved lithium-ion battery core system for use within an electric vehicle. The present invention has a battery receiver and a battery charger. The battery receiver has a battery adaptor and a receiver lock. The battery adaptor allows the present invention to insert standardized lithium-ion cores that are managed at a specified voltage level suitable for the electric vehicle. The lithium-ion core includes a removable and rechargeable lithium-ion core, that can be charged by the battery charger. The battery charger has a plurality of cores, a plurality of lights, and an ejection button. The ejection button removes a battery from the battery charger. All of these various components allow for the present invention to provide users with a system for keeping electric vehicles properly charged for long distance travel.

Abstract: A device has a dual-geometry waveguide structure with an input, an output and two coupler structures optically coupled using arms of different optical path lengths. Each arm has a first passive waveguide having a first length and a dual-core waveguide geometry, coupled by a transition structure to a second passive waveguide having a second length and a single-core waveguide geometry. Optical mode confinement is larger in the first passive waveguide than in the second passive waveguide. The first and second lengths are selected such that a temperature sensitivity of optical path length difference of the dual-geometry waveguide structure is lower than a temperature sensitivity of optical path length difference that would characterize a standard waveguide structure differing from the dual-geometry waveguide structure in that no transition structure is present within either arm of the standard waveguide structure, each arm of the standard waveguide structure either excluding any waveguide having a dual-core waveguide geometry or excluding any waveguide having a single-core waveguide geometry.

Abstract: A device comprises three elements, realized as photonic integrated circuits. The first element comprises a tunable semiconductor laser emitting light at a laser output wavelength. The second element comprises a wavelength selective element, coupled to the first element. The third element comprises N photodetectors where N>=2, coupled to the second element. Light coupled into the second element from the first element is de-multiplexed by the wavelength selective element such that a ratio of light power coupled from the second element into one of the N photodetectors to light power coupled from the second element into another one of the N photodetectors is a function of the laser output wavelength. The responses of the N photodetectors facilitate at least one of measurement and control of the laser output wavelength.

Abstract: A device has first, second and third elements fabricated on a common substrate. The first element supports a first optical mode in an active waveguide structure characterized by a mesa. The second element supports a second optical mode in a passive waveguide structure. The third element, at least partly butt-coupled to the first element, supports an intermediate optical mode in an intermediate waveguide structure characterized by a waveguide core cross section including a shallow step. A tapered waveguide structure in at least one of the second and third elements facilitates efficient adiabatic transformation between the second optical mode and the intermediate optical mode. No adiabatic transformation occurs between the intermediate optical mode and the first optical mode. Lithographic alignment marks facilitate precise alignment of the three elements during device fabrication.

Abstract: A bone anchor insertion device is disclosed for attaching a suture that is fixed to portion of soft tissue to a portion of bone. The device has a handle, a nosepiece connected to a distal end of the handle, a bone anchor connected to the nosepiece, and an actuator disposed on the handle for deploying the bone anchor. A suture ratchet or tensioning mechanism is disposed in the handle for tensioning suture which is associated with the bone anchor. This mechanism permits precise tensioning, while also permitting one-handed operation, thereby allowing the practitioner to use his or her other hand for other activities, such as camera operation or the like.
