Abstract: The device can include a first member connected to a second member via junctions. The members can be statically or pivotally connected at the junctions via arms extending from cross-beams of the members. The junctions can be configured to provide a biasing force. Methods of using the device may include collapsing the device and inserting it through an incision, allowing the biasing force to cause continuous traction and counter-traction adjacent to a leading dissection edge so that retraction of the skin from the tissue can be facilitated during a surgical procedure.

Abstract: Tuning fracture hydraulic conductivity can be provided so that high hydraulic conductivity in high temperature zones and low hydraulic conductivity in low temperature zones can be defined in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Uniform thermal gradient along flow paths can be provided or defined to help provide such conductivity zones. Experimentation performed to evaluate embodiments showed that embodiments could prevent appearance of dominant flow paths between the wells and maintain high heat extraction rates. Embodiments can greatly increase cumulative heat extraction. Embodiments can also be provided for application solely to the injection wells. Other embodiments can position tuning agents between the wells and still help provide control of the fluid flow in the reservoir and enhance heat extraction.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes compositions and methods for preparing membrane protein nanosheets and two-dimensional crystals. In particular, the methods employ a solvent. A mixture of a polymer and a membrane protein is solubilized in the solvent, applied to a substrate, and subsequently dried to form the nanosheet or two-dimensional crystal. Applicants have surprisingly found that the membrane proteins maintain their structure when exposed to solvents during the short processing time utilized.

Abstract: Methods and systems facilitate measuring flow properties of a material, such as biomass materials, that include different material particles. Sample holding plates securely hold material particles and secure them to sample holders. A normal force actuator applies a normal force between material particles held by the sample holding plates and a sliding force actuator applies a sliding force. Normal and sliding force sensors monitor the transmitted forces, allowing a processor to determine adhesion and friction characteristics between particles held by the first and second sample holding plates.
