Each of the nozzles also has a first flow channel for providing a stream of said first polymeric material to said mold and a second flow channel for providing a stream of said second polymeric material to said mold. The machine further includes a manifold for feeding the polymeric materials from their sources to each of the nozzles and each of the associated molds, such that each of the streams of the first polymeric materials flows from each nozzles into each associated mold simultaneously and each of the streams of the second polymeric materials flows from each nozzle into each associated mold simultaneously.

The invention is relating to a process of rolling the brim of a can of a metal-plastic-metal construction on a small diameter without provoking a crack in the metal layer (3) in the course of this folding operation. This process consists of reducing locally the thickness of plastic (2) in the zone (5) or (6) being rolled in order that the construction reduced to a thin layer of plastic (2) between two foils (3) and (4) of metal behaves nearly as a foil of homogeneous metal. The plastic flowed toward outside of the zone intended to be rolled forms a bulge either towards the exterior of this zone (7) or towards the interior (18). The process applies to food cans and to beverage cans of a metal-plastic-metal construction, as well as to the ends of these cans. The can bodies and ends fabricated by the process constitute equally an object of the invention.

An easy open end for food and beverage cans having reduced aluminum content is provided in an end having a metal polymer metal laminate construction. An opening panel as defined in the end body by a pair of first and second spaced apart score lines disposed in the first and second major surfaces, respectively. Each of the first and second score lines define an area of reduced thickness for both the metal layer and the adjacent polymer layer. The opening panel can be displaced from the remainder of the end body to provide an easy opening can by perforating the end body at a point along the first and second score lines.

A method of simultaneously effecting the initiation, flow and termination of flow of corresponding melt streams of polymer materials from a plurality co-injection nozzles of a multi-co-injection nozzle injection molding machine to form a plurality of multi-layer injection molded plastic articles. A melt stream of polymeric material for each layer is provided and feed along an equal flow path to each nozzle using a common pressure source for each stream of a given polymeric material which is to form a layer in more than one article. A valve means effects the initiation, flow and termination of the flow of material simultaneously and identically in each nozzle.

Improvement in container configuration is attained by proper container design and by maintaining proper headspace of gases in the container during thermal processing and/or by controlled reforming of the bottom wall of the container. Further improvements are attained by controlling the thermal history of the empty container, such as by pre-shrinking the container before it is filled with food and sealed.

The articles, parison, and containers can be open-ended, or closed, for example, with end closures double seamed thereto or flexible lids secured thereto by an adherent, or heat seal, or other suitable means. The folded over portion and any not folded over portion of the internal layer preferably extends substantially uniformly into the marginal end portion of the side wall.

A molecularly oriented article having a tubular sidewall is blow-molded from a thermoplastic parison which is heat-treated prior to blowing to provide the parison sidewall with a temperature gradient wherein the temperature of the inside of the sidewall is greater than that of the outside, both of said temperatures being within the orientation temperature range of the thermoplastic. The temperature gradient results in the sidewall of the article having a different and more uniform circumferential orientation release stress distribution radially across the sidewall than would be obtained if the parison were blown isothermally.
