It has been suggested that synthetic multifilamentary yarns can be produced by melt-spinning a polyamide or polyester polymer under conditions of substantially simultaneous spinning and drawing wherein prior to said drawing the filaments of the fiber are lubricated with a spin finish by surface contact with a lube roll surface of not less than about 90 RMS. However, in commercial operation of the process at high throughput rates of 50 pounds per hour or greater through the spinneret, serious problems have been encountered due to "flicking" or momentary slackness of one or more filaments from the main yarn bundle above the lube roll, which flicking results in production of yarn of relatively poor quality. It has now been found that the occurrence of said flicking of the filaments can be greatly reduced by applying the spin finish from a convergence guide having a yarn-lubricating surface of not less than about 10 RMS and means for distributing a film of lubricant over said surface. The resulting high-strength multifilament yarn having relatively uniform quality is particularly applicable for tire and industrial uses.

In a process for producing polyethylene terephthalate yarn wherein a liquid finish is applied to the yarn, said process involving spinning and drawing steps, the improvement comprising first applying to the yarn prior to said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of a polyalkylene glycol compound which is a mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether prepared in accordance with the equation: ##STR1## where R is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, x and y are the number of moles of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide respectively and wherein ethylene oxide comprises 40 to 60 percent by weight of the combined total of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and x+y has a value to produce a molecular weight of from 300 to 1,000, and then applying to said yarn after said drawing step a liquid finish composition consisting essentially of about 70 to 95 parts by weight of said mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoether, about 5 to 30 parts by weight of a silane having the structural formula: ##STR2## wherein n =2 to 5, and a sufficient amount of a water-soluble alkaline catalyst to adjust the pH of the finish composition to 8-10.

This method of finishing the tire yarn results in an improved adhesion of the fiber to rubber.

It has been suggested that certain polyglycol ethers, in particular mixed polyoxyethylated-polyoxypropylated monoethers, are useful as spin finishes in the production of polyester tire yarns. Polyglycol ethers having a relatively low molecular weight of about 300 to 1,000 make the best lubricants; however, their effectiveness is significantly diminished by volatilization loss during high temperature processing of the tire yarn. It has now been found that said volatilization loss is greatly decreased by including in the finish a small percentage of certain antioxidant compounds. The particular antioxidant compound used has been found to be very critical.
