In the image forming apparatus, an electromagnetic wave generated by an electromagnetic wave generator is emitted to the measured object through a spatial modulation unit for spatially modulating a signal intensity. An electromagnetic wave that has passed through the measured object is measured by an electromagnetic wave detecting unit. A measurement signal is processed by a signal processing section based on a reference signal synchronized with the signal intensity modulated by the spatial modulation unit.
