Also, there is provided a method by which caul plate sticking may be reduced when hydrogen peroxide is used as a furnish add-on.

A process for modifying spent sulfite liquor by reacting the liquor with a phenolic compound in the presence of an oxidizing agent is disclosed. The phenolic compound-modified spent sulfite contains 4%-25% reacted phenolic compound based on the dry weight of the original spent sulfite liquor. The modified liquor also contains a reduction in the sugars content and sulfonic acid groups of at least 20% each over the original liquor. The modified spent sulfite liquor is suitable for use in thermosetting resin formulations.

An improved initiator for the in situ polymerization such as sulfoxy compounds is provided. Over a wide range of add-on ratio of vinyl polymer to lignocellulosic particles, coatings for panels can be produced which have neither the solvent sensitivity of the polymer nor the water sensitivity of the cellulose.

The invention relates to formulations and methods of manufacturing spray-dried phenol-formaldehyde resin that contain highly reactive phenolic compounds that include resorcinol, alkyl resorcinols, meta-amino phenol or/and phloroglucinol. The powder resin contains 0.02 to 0.09 moles of the free (unreacted) highly reactive phenolic compound per 100 parts of the solids of the dried phenol-formaldehyde resin. The powder resin composition has fast curing property and desirable shelf life for manufacturing wood composite products.
