Abstract:
A glass article including: at least one anti-glare surface having haze, distinctness-of-image, surface roughness, and uniformity properties, as defined herein. A method of making the glass article includes, for example: depositing deformable particles on at least a portion of a glass surface of the article; causing the deposited deformable particles on the surface to deform and adhere to the surface; and contacting the surface having the adhered particles with an etchant to form the anti-glare surface. A display system that incorporates the glass article, as defined herein, is also disclosed.
Abstract:
Optical systems of the present invention include first and second optical amplifiers that are operated individually to provide gain profiles that do not conform with a desired composite, or overall or total, gain profile, e.g., substantially flat, but to produce a desired composite noise figure profile, e.g., substantially flat or otherwise, for the amplifiers. Generally, the desired composite noise figure profile is produced, while attempting to minimize the deviation of the composite gain profile from the desired composite gain profile.
Abstract:
A rotary wing aircraft is provided with longitudinally oriented counter-rotating rotors with circumferentially spaced variable pitch rotor blades connected to rotatable support rings mounted on the aircraft fuselage. Rotor downwash may be guided laterally and longitudinally by respective sets of moveable guide vanes. Propulsion may be obtained by an engine providing thrust and power take-off for driving the rotors. An auxiliary or second engine may be drivingly connected to the rotors. One embodiment includes rotors with lift or blade pitch angle control mechanism for changing the resultant lift forces for providing aircraft lateral movement and movement about a yaw axis. A wind driven power turbine includes a similar pitch angle control mechanism.
Abstract:
A method of diagnosing an operating condition of a short runner valve in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine using an exhaust sensor in an exhaust manifold of the internal combustion engine. The short runner valve is commanded to an open position for a test period, it is resolved whether the test period has elapsed, and it is determined whether a sensed exhaust gas parameter has exceeded a threshold during the test period. A pass signal is issued if the sensed exhaust gas parameter has exceeded the threshold within the test period. Otherwise, a fail signal is issued if the sensed exhaust gas parameter has not exceeded the threshold within the test period.

Methods, systems, and apparatus for a fill port for a flexible container such as a flexible self supporting dewatering structure. An apparatus in accordance with an embodiment of the invention can be a fill port for a flexible container such as a flexible self supporting dewatering structure, wherein the flexible container can include a flexible material and an opening. The fill port can include an inner port body capable of mounting to one side of the flexible material and adjacent to the opening, wherein inner port body is capable of receiving a fill material through the opening. The fill port can also include an outer port body capable of mounting to an opposing side of the flexible material adjacent to the opening, wherein outer port body is capable of receiving the fill material through the opening. Furthermore, the fill body can include means for advancing the inner port body towards the outer port body, wherein the flexible material is positioned relative to and between the inner port body and outer port body, and transfer of the fill material can be facilitated through the inner port body, the at least one opening, and the outer port body.
Abstract:
Optical systems of the present invention generally include an optical signal controller disposed along an optical link between two optical nodes. The optical signal controller is configured to provide a monitoring signal from an optical signal passing between the nodes as a plurality of wavelength sub-bands at least one of which includes a plurality of signal channels. The controller generates a compensating channel having an optical power that is a function of the monitoring signal power in the plurality of wavelength sub-bands or total power. The compensating channel is combined with the optical signal to compensate for power variations in the optical signal passing between the nodes. In addition, the compensating channels can be used to transmit communication or system supervisory information between monitoring points and/or nodes in the system.
Abstract:
A geotextile container (12) having strengthened port sleeve attachments. The integrity of the port sleeve of this invention is strengthened by incorporating an inlet port (10), having a port patch and a port sleeve, into a geotextile container (12). The inlet port is preferably made of a pliable material which renders attachment of the inlet port to the geotextile container easier and results in tighter, stronger seams between the inlet port and the geotextile container. With its stronger material and the resulting tighter seams, the inlet port and port patch are better able to withstand stresses and seams are less likely to rupture, thereby enhancing the integrity of the geotextile container.
Abstract:
One or more unique hinges are provided within panels of a fragility packaging article for use in retaining one or more fragile articles within a container (e.g., a corrugated box). The unique hinges provide predicted deformation paths that assist in protecting one or more fragile items stored in the container. One of the unique hinges is a diamond shaped hinge that provides at least two predicted deformation paths. Other unique hinges of the present invention includes a gusset hinge, a step hinge, and a v-hinge, each of which provides at least one predicted deformation path. The predicted deformation paths reduce permanent deformation and provide for improved overall cushioning, thereby increasing protection of fragile items and significantly reducing damage that may occur to the fragile items. The unique hinges of the present invention also improve the cosmetic appearance of a fragility packing article because a majority of crushing occurs along the unique hinges, preventing random unsightly crush points from occurring throughout the packaging article.
Abstract:
A drill rod chuck in which the closing of the jaws is effected through the use of gas springs mounted in the slidable jaw actuating jaw bowl. Further the jaws are supported by bushings against cantilever loading during drilling and the jaws are positively advanced and retracted through slidable interengagement with the jaw bowl.
Abstract:
The invention provides a unitary packaging structure for a shock sensitive article. The packaging structure includes a platform portion which includes a platform portion adapted to support the article, and a sidewall structure of preferably flexible material forming an enclosure around the platform portion. The sidewall structure includes an inboard wall being integral with the platform portion, and an outboard wall maintained in spaced relationship from the inboard wall by a bridge section, the inboard wall being relatively shorter than the outboard wall so that the platform portion is held a specified cushion distance above a lower edge of the outboard wall. Shock limiting formations are formed in the sidewall structure for restricting the movement of the platform portion toward the lower edge of the outboard wall upon shock loading of the platform portion.
