    摘要： Pattern recognition system which provides an indication of the confidence with which a candidate is selected for an unknown pattern. The pattern recognition apparatus includes an image data input device, a host for segmenting the image data into unknown patterns, and a character recognition device for providing a candidate for each unknown pattern. The character recognition device includes a confidence level indicator for providing a confidence level indication. In one aspect, the confidence level indication is determined based on the proximity of an unknown pattern to a known pattern. In another aspect, the confidence level indication is determined based on the consistency with which the unknown pattern is recognized using different recognition functions. In yet another aspect, the confidence level indication is determined by ensuring that a candidate is not provided unless the candidate is closer than a predetermined distance from a known pattern. The pattern recognition apparatus may be provided in a stand-alone device including the image data input device, the host and the character recognition device in one integrated device, and this device may interface to a network bus. Alternatively, the pattern recognition apparatus may be distributed over a network bus. A preview function may be provided so as to preview results of recognition processing.

    摘要： A temperature control apparatus for a copying machine has a halogen heater for heating a fixing roller, a thermistor for detecting the surface temperature of the fixing roller, and a microcomputer for performing ON/OFF control of the halogen heater in accordance with an output from the thermistor. After the heater is turned on or off, the heater is kept in the ON or OFF state for a predetermined period time irrespective of the output from the thermistor. A waiting time before using the copying machine after the power is turned on is shortened without requiring a heater having a high output power. Erratic operation due to noise generated upon turning on or off of the heater is prevented.

    摘要： A document image capture method and scanner, and an image processing apparatus incorporating such a scanner, in which a document is scanned two or more times. The first scan preferably provides bi-level image data, which is analyzed to identify blocks of uniform image type (for example, text, line drawing, grayscale image, or full-color image) within the document. The second scan, preferably performed at lower resolution than the first, provides grayscale or color information, which is substituted in the grayscale or color blocks, respectively, for the bi-level information obtained in the first scan. A third scan, to provide information of the third type, may also be performed. An operator preferably views an image of the document, based on the scanned information, to be sure that the identification and typing of the various blocks has been done correctly, and may instruct that the document be rescanned to provide new data for a designated portion of the document image, if it appears that an error has occurred. The information representing the document image obtained in this way is preferably stored using a set of linked bit maps, one bit map for each block. The memory capacity needed to store the information can be reduced further by treating the page and its margins as a frame, and by storing information about the frame, and any horizontal or vertical lines in the document, in simple vector form. Any portion of the document which is just background is not stored.
