摘要: A run-flat support system and method for installing the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, the run-flat support system includes a torque assembly removably coupled to a split wheel rim of a pneumatic tired wheel. Support segments are adapted for attachment to the torque assembly in order to support the pneumatic tired wheel in a flat condition such as an under-inflated condition or deflated condition. Lateral support structures, which may include the form of a wedge, are secured to the support segments to provide a bead lock between beads of the interior side walls of the pneumatic tired wheel and the split wheel rim.

摘要: A portable perfusion/oxygenation module includes respiratory gas driven dual positive displacement pumps coupled to a stacked membrane oxygenator unit for perfusion fluid oxygenation, a valving manifold to control perfusate flow-direction coupled to an organ chamber designed to enable easy installation of organ and maintenance of intra and extra organ fluid pressure. All of the components and oxygen cylinders are fitted into an insulated chest capable of sustaining perfusion and oxygenation for 24 hours. The perfusion/oxygenation apparatus requires no electrical power, is compact with the total weight including the perfusion fluids and organ weighing less than 50 pounds. With low cumulative weight and the extremely low flow rate of gas required to pump the perfusate, the oxygen supply is capable of sustaining pumping operation for 24 hours without gas cylinder change. The dual pumps have axially aligned, commonly connected pistons using adjustable linkages that provide a simple and robust means of adjusting perfusate volume and pumping rate. No movable membranes, diaphragms or electrical power are required to deliver oxygenated perfusate.

摘要: Medical devices and methods are presented for protecting a limb, e.g., an arm, of a patient during a medical procedure. The medical devices and methods utilize a plurality of longitudinal sealed fluid pockets to thermally insulate and cushion an extremity of a limb. The plurality of longitudinal sealed fluid pockets is incorporated in a protective body that is shaped to wrap around the extremity when the medical device is deployed. The protective body has at least one access opening to provide access through the protective body to one or more corresponding portions of the extremity. Access panels may be formed into the protective body to allow portions of the extremity to be covered or uncovered and used with left or right limbs.
Other devices and methods are presented.

摘要: A package for an elongated flexible fiber. The package comprises a pair of package portions which define a fiber receiving cavity therein. Lips around the perimeter of the package allow a fiber to be wrapped thereon and passed between the lips into the fiber receiving cavity. Each package portion defines a fiber end receiving cavity therein, each fiber end receiving cavity being adapted for receiving an end of the fiber. Each fiber receiving cavity may be deflected away from the opposite package portion, thereby freeing the corresponding end of the fiber. The natural spring action of the elastically flexible fiber will cause the end of the fiber to pop radially outwardly from the package. Terminals, operating tips and other devices may be attached to the ends of the fibers. After both ends of the fiber have been thus freed, the package may be repositioned along the length of extended fiber by simply rolling it so that one section of the fiber is rewound into the package, and the other section is further unwound therefrom. The invention is particularly adapted for use with light transmitting fibers, such as used with surgical lasers in medical environments. The package and fiber may be easily sterilized prior to use, and after use the fiber may be rewound into the package for easy disposal as biomedical waste. In non-medical areas, such as light transmitting fibers in the communication industry, the package is reusable.

摘要: An operating assembly for use in a liquid operating environment includes a flexible elongated light transmitting fiber having a light reflecting tip mounted thereon for reflecting the light beam laterally. The tip includes a number of features which minimize undesired heating of the tip. The tip is preferably made of solid gold and has a reflecting mirror surface coined on the gold tip. A lateral flushing passageway is disposed through the tip and allows surrounding ambient liquid to flow across the surface of the mirror to aid in cooling the tip and to aid in keeping the mirror clean. The tip is preferably mounted on the fiber by crimping. The tip includes a sufficient volume of material having a sufficient thermal conductivity located between the reflecting mirror and the crimped connection so as to dissipate heat energy which may be generated in the tip and to avoid sufficient heat energy reaching the crimped connection to cause a thermally induced failure of the mechanical attachment of the tip to the fiber at the crimp.
