    摘要: A method and apparatus are provided for determining an adjustable precompensation value in a partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) data channel. The PRML data channel includes an adjustable precompensation function for modulating the write data waveform. A predetermined test pattern is written using write circuitry in the disk file. The predetermined test pattern is insensitive to channel misequalization and provides a reference for gain and timing control. The written predetermined test pattern is read back using read circuitry in the disk file. An error in sample values in the read back predetermined test pattern is identified using logic provided in the PRML data channel while performing a standard read operation of a data sector written with the test pattern. The adjustable write precompensation value is adjusted responsive to identifying an error.

A process for manufacturing this tapered tip design is also presented.

    摘要: Conventional perpendicular writers that utilize an extended return pole are subject to large flux leakage. This problem has been reduced in the prior art by adding a downstream shield. This still leaves significant upstream leakage. This has now been eliminated by adding an upstream shield and then connecting the up and downstream shields by using side shields. The latter need not extend all the way from the downstream to the upstream shield in which case their thickness is increased relative to the full side shields.

    摘要: Method and apparatus are presented for electrically coupling a slider to ground. In one embodiment, a bonding pad is provided on a side of the slider body separate from the bonding pad(s) used for read/write signals. This separate bonding pad is electrically coupled within the slider body to components that are to be coupled to ground. A separate conductor provided on the suspension (e.g., a trace, a flex circuit, etc.) may be electrically coupled to the separate bonding pad via gold ball bonding. The conductor is also coupled to ground in the hard-disk drive device (e.g., via the preamplifier). The use of the separated bonding pad and trace may negate the need to use a conductive adhesive to electrically ground the slider via its attachment to the tongue of a slider.
