AQUEOUS DILATANT SOLUTIONS CONTAINING 0.5 TO 6.0 WEIGHT PERCENT ALKALI METAL BORATE AND 0.5 TO 6.0 WEIGHT PERCENT WATER-SOLUBLE POLYVINYL ALCOHOL CAN BE RAPIDLY APPLIED TO THE SURFACE OF AIRCRAFT RUNWAYS TO PROVIDE A SPARK AND FIRE-RETARDANT CUSHION FOR EMERGENCY AIRCRAFT LANDINGS. THE DILATANT SOLUTION IS PREFERABLY FORMED BY MIXING TWO AQUEOUS SYSTEMS, ONE CONTAINING BORATE AND THE OTHER PVA. THE MIXING IS PREFERABLY EFFECTED BY SPRAYING CONVERGING STREAMS OF THE TWO SOLUTIONS.

THE TRANS-DIETHYL-4-CHLORO - 2 - BUTENYL-ACETAMIDOMALONATE IS FORMED BY REACTION OF TRANS 1,4-DICHLORO-BUTENE-2 WITH THE ALKALI METAL SALF OF DIETHYL ACETAMIDOMALONATE.

5,8-DIMETHYL-5,6,7,8-TETRAHYDRO-1-NAPHTHOLS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING 1,5-HEXADIENE WITH A SUBSTITUTED OR UNSUBSTITUTED PHENOL IN THE PRESENCE OF A TRIPHENOXY ALUMINUM CATALYST. THE NAPHTHOLS CAN BE CONVERTED TO THE CORRESPONDING N-SUBSTITUTED CARBAMATES BY REACTION WITH AN ISOCYANATE. THE CARAMATES ARE USEFUL AS INSECTICIDES, MITICIDES, AND NEMATOCIDES.
